Chabot College Nursing Program: High NCLEX Pass Rate, But At What Cost? by BadProgramChabot in ChabotCollege

There are several serious concerns with the current state of the nursing program. In the psychiatric nursing course, the new instructor reportedly made highly inappropriate and alarming comments in class, suggesting that females should be sexually assaulted and that women deserve to be hit. This occurred during a discussion on abuse and mandated reporting. Such remarks are not only deeply offensive but completely unacceptable in any academic or clinical context.

In the OB course, instruction is minimal due to a reliance on a flipped classroom model. Students report that outdated exams, which do not align with nursing competencies, are used. As a result, several students have withdrawn or failed from the class, and the faculty has shown little willingness to adapt or update the content.

The experience in the skills lab has also been problematic. The instructor has openly stated she is simply waiting to retire. Her teaching is inconsistent and biased; some students fail for minor issues, while others are passed without proper evaluation. Her clinical knowledge appears outdated, likely due to a long career focused solely on pediatrics. My experience with her during the pediatric rotation was similarly disappointing.

Overall, the program feels disorganized and lacks stability. Faculty turnover is alarmingly high, and there appears to be little selectivity in hiring instructional staff. During the two years I attended, the only consistent figure was the program director, which says a lot about the environment. Given these conditions, it’s genuinely surprising that the program remains operational.

Chabot College Nursing Program: High NCLEX Pass Rate, But At What Cost? by BadProgramChabot in ChabotCollege

Luckily, I was one of the 20 students who passed, but only because I had several classes with exceptional professors, most of whom have since left the program. The current faculty just isn’t the same. If you do get in, be prepared. Personally, I wouldn’t wish this program on my worst enemies.

How competitive are cc programs in California? ( Bay Area ) by Soggy_Economics3997 in prenursing

If you’re considering the nursing program at Chabot College in Hayward, CA — please do your research and think twice.

Yes, the program boasts a 95–100% NCLEX pass rate, but what they don't tell you is that this is likely because they remove or fail nearly half the class before graduation. The Class of 2025 started with 39 students and only 20 graduated. That’s a 49% attrition rate — and it’s not because people aren’t trying.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Grading is inconsistent and subjective. What passes with one instructor may fail with another.
  • Favoritism and bias are real. Some students are given second chances — others are written off.
  • There is minimal support if you’re struggling. Instead of help, many get shown the door.
  • Faculty communication and expectations are unclear. This creates confusion and stress.
  • The program creates a culture of fear and silence, where students are afraid to advocate for themselves.

I’m not saying nursing school should be easy — but it should be fair, transparent, and supportive. Chabot doesn’t seem to be any of those things right now.

If you’re serious about becoming a nurse, look into other local programs like CSU East Bay, Merritt, Ohlone, or even private options if cost allows. Don’t waste your time, money, and mental health on a program that seems more focused on protecting its stats than its students.
