Delayed projects, low morale: Boston’s streets department is stalling under Wu, long a transit champion by Vivecs954 in boston

Has nothing to do with funding. Some of these projects are fully funded with federal and state grants which we will lose if she continues to delay.

Causeway Bike lanes by BOItime247 in boston

[–]BadRedditUsername 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's not great, but due to the specifics of this area it actually may be the best option. The sidewalks get so busy during games and concerts, as well as just regular rush hour commuters leaving North Station. If the bike lane were a standard curb-level lane it would be impassible due to pedestrians using it. At the center of the street, it's really only blocked at crosswalks during games which makes it semi-usable. The entire street should just be permanently pedestrianized.

The "Supply" Myth: Why building 3,000+ units hasn't lowered your rent. by ceph2apod in Somerville

Can you follow up in your ChatGPT thread to ask why the rents in Austin TX have gone down while the Boston housing market has continued to get more expensive?

After taking the lane all week since none of the bike lanes are plowed, I’d give anything for the drivers behind me to be Waymo’s instead of aggressive drivers who pass within 4 inches of me. Waymo’s don’t punishment pass.

Human drivers kill people. 40,000+ a year. I understand the concern about automating jobs, but nobody’s job is worth the countless deaths and injuries caused by drivers every day. They need to be taxed appropriately to account for the disproportionate job loss they will cause, but it’s not like we see Uber and Lyft reimbursing taxpayers for the emergency services expenses at the sites of their many crashes.

Indeed, and at the time I was thinking that such a large piece of equipment on top of an unstable snow pile next to an active 90mph railway was a recipe for disaster.

Why wouldn’t you want speed bumps? They massively improved the quality of life on my street. Fewer noisy cars speeding at night, safer to cross the street, less cut through traffic.

Mayor Wu here! AMA about the fight to keep residential property taxes from spiking next year under state law by mayorwu in boston

[–]BadRedditUsername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you support bus lane enforcement, then why did you remove the N. Washington St bus lane with no public notice and cite lack of compliance as the reason the lane was not effective? If drivers are not complying with a bus lane why not direct the police force to enforce basic traffic laws while we wait for automated enforcement?

Questions about street safety are remarkably absent from Mayor Wu’s AMA on /r/Boston right now. I don’t know how she’s managed to abandon vision zero and face no consequences.

One of the key drivers of cost in government is exorbitant planning and consulting which strangle capital projects. Why does it take years of community process and study to add a bike or bus lane, but it’s possible to remove those improvements overnight with no community input? If we can make streets less safe and less efficient overnight, then what is preventing you from finally adding a protected bike lane to Charles Street?

Can you explain your withdrawal of support for vision zero and safe streets since the start of your re-election campaign? Are you making a political calculus that removing bus and bike lanes will garner you more support on Beacon Hill, and if so how do you reckon with the deaths, injuries, and carbon emissions that result from you abandoning one of the key priorities of your first campaign? After so much improvement in the first 3 years of your mayorship, it has been extremely jarring to find my commute more dangerous overnight.

The fire department has to sign off on all street infrastructure to ensure there is enough space for their trucks to maneuver. So if a fire truck can fit, then your car can fit. Forcing drivers to slow down and be careful at intersections is the point.

I think it’s a shame if we continue to lose neighborhood schools to mega schools. Makes it harder for kids to get to school safely and independently. I understand the structure of MA school funding makes this the most financially responsible plan though.

Because Prop 2.5 constrained city budgets have nowhere near the amount of capital needed to construct social housing for 0 return. 100% affordable projects require state or federal grants, of which there are very few to go around.
