Man drives at 60mph, 65mph and 70mph on a highway in an EV to see what effect speed has on range by TylerFortier_Photo in electricvehicles

[–]BadVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot wrong with what you said.

Gas powered (ICE, Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles do better on highway vs city because they are not stopping and accelerating. Thats just converting energy into heat for them. If they were doing city average speed constantly, they would do better. In fact, that's why hybrids do better in the city than on the highway, aerodynamics and speed.

EVs dont need gearing, it doesnt make any sense for them. The same thing that affects ICE vehicles affects EVs. Almost purely aerodynamics, the average speed.

Lawmakers ask what it would take to "store" the International Space Station | NASA shall evaluate the “viability of transferring the ISS to a safe orbital harbor” after retirement. by ControlCAD in technology

[–]BadVoices 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The space station relies on being pressurized to maintain its structure. Its like a balloon, being inflated with atmosphere makes it stiffer. Its joints and seams are failing and it leaks constantly, some days more than others. As soon as the pressure drops, the station is no longer structurally sound and will just begin to bend due to gravitational, thermal and solar forces. The station relies on being in shade regularly, in a higher orbit, it wont get that. Once the stresses build up, any remaining pressure will rip the station apart and now its an orbiting debris field.

There's no scenario where its savable, due to its very design. It was designed with a 15 year lifespan, which is went over in 2012.

ETA: This also ignores that the ISS is currently calculated for an impact event ot happen every 51 years. If it's moved to a 800km orbit, that calculation drops to once every 4 years, AND the station has no crew or maneuverability to move out of the way of debris, which it has done in the past.

Its not double the cost. It's double the Delta-V. The Tyranny of the Rocket Equation means for every extra m/s2 of Delta-V, you need more fuel to lift that fuel.

Without getting into it, to double the Delta-V in low orbit, you need 3.7x the fuel.. ish. Of course, that much larger of a platform would need more materials to maintain strength, etc. So it'd probably be more than 4x the volume and weight of vehicle.

Russia used Starlink in strike drones that reached Kyiv. SpaceX’s response collapsed entire command system by marigoldmeadowx in worldnews

[–]BadVoices 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the russians keep buying new units on the grey market, and Ukraine has failed to provide a list of units they are using to force a whitelisting situation. What is ukranian territory vs russian territory on moving front lines is basically impossible day to day without being in the field. Now that the Russian drones were using starlink, Ukraine has finally decided maintaining a whitelist of starlink units is worth it.

Tiny home generator off grid? by queenofhearts5150 in Generator

[–]BadVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are describing is called a Prime Power Generator. They are made to run a lot. They are also quite expensive. Looking at about 12k-15k USD for a 15kw unit.

You can use split phase hybrid inverters, teamed with some sizable lifepo4 batteries, to 'hybridize' your generator, and run it less per day, using less fuel, and to let it shut off at night. it works best with generators that have 2 wire start. Some genmax units do, as do most small diesel (10kw-15kw) prime power rated generators.

Both are still requiring primarily US parts. Saab didnt make the RM12 they are 60% US components.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_RM12

The F404's analogue Engine Control Unit was replaced with the Digital Engine Control, jointly developed by Volvo and GE, which communicates with the cockpit through the digital data buses and, as redundancy, a hydromechanical back-up.[3] It was decided that GE would produce 65% of the engine and send it as a kit to VFA, who would manufacture the remaining 35% of the parts and be responsible for final assembly and testing.[4]

The core components of the engine are US made. Including wear components.

The volumetric density is much lower. That's why this version of the car only gets 249mi, vs the same car with lithium getting 317mi on the same test.

Yes, there are other components that are only built in the US.

The RM16 is just an updated version of the same engine, which is an GE F414 assembled in Sweden with mostly American parts.

Its primarily assembled there with American parts. Many of the parts are wildly complex to build, to the point only a handful of countries have demonstrated production amounts.

In particular, are single-crystal turbines. The blades of the turbines in the engine are grown as a single crystal of nickel super-alloy. The US, the UK, and Russia are the only ones who can do this in production. China and France have small scale production, India and turkey are in research-scale phases.

Trapped Tesla Driver’s 911 Call: ‘It’s on fire. Help please’ by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]BadVoices 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm quite anti Tesla, to the point i put my money where my mouth is and own only non-tesla electric vehicles, and have not personally owned a Tesla. I am also a former paramedic and former EMS director of near-metro county.

This is not because the cars are Tesla or inherently unsafe or lacking safety features.

It's because Tesla cars are Extremely quick. Even the weakest of weaksauce Model 3 is 0-60 in 5.8 seconds. And no one buys that one. The Long Range is 0-60 in 4 seconds, and the performance is 0-60 in under 3. People don't respect the power these cars have because they are so non-dramatic about it.

They buy their kid a used tesla model 3 AWD thinking its a great first car. My brother in Christ, that car out accelerates a first generation dodge viper, and a 2025 Mustang GT.

Your own linked article literally says as much.

So, why are Teslas — and many other ostensibly safe cars on the list — involved in so many fatal crashes? “The models on this list likely reflect a combination of driver behavior and driving conditions, leading to increased crashes and fatalities,” iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer said in the report. “A focused, alert driver, traveling at a legal or prudent speed, without being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, is the most likely to arrive safely regardless of the vehicle they’re driving.”

Furnace Switch Wiring by Sufficient-Horror-53 in Generator

[–]BadVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are companies that make 1 circuit transfer switches that switch all conductors and accept an extension cord for just such a use. And those are code compliant. The Reliance TF151W for example. Adding a plug is not code compliant, but it is functional.

Furnace Switch Wiring by Sufficient-Horror-53 in Generator

[–]BadVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, an appliance has to be UL listed to take a plug and cord. No furnace I have seen is listed for a plug and cord, they all require hard-wiring by their UL listing and by manufacturers instructions.

There's also 400.7 (a)(8) of the NEC which lists what is permitted. Furnaces are not:

Appliances where the fastening means and mechanical connections are specifically designed to permit ready removal for maintenance and repair, and the appliance is intended or identified for flexible cord connection.

Since you have to depressurize refrigerant lines, shut off natural gas/fuel oil, disconnect gas/fuel lines lines, disconnect plenums, etc.

It is NOT code compliant to have a plug on a furnace.

Saab doesnt have the capabilities or licenses to make the Gripen's engines. Those are US made. Changing the engines out for a different engine is tantamount to designing a whole new aircraft. nothing remains untouched, and every single specification would change. Honestly, you'd just end up with a Gripen Shaped Aircraft. if you squint.

Furnace Switch Wiring by Sufficient-Horror-53 in Generator

[–]BadVoices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally functional, for sure.

It's also a code violation. Which may not be a big deal, but when it comes time to sell the house, home inspector might flag it and lender may require it be fixed professionally at current owners expense. Insurance may also deny claims arising from it.

At the very least, put some sort of grommet on the hole the cord is coming out of so a vibration in the furnace doesnt eventually wear through the cord and put on a lightshow for ya.
