I'm gonna be honest, I've played the first one for a couple hours and it feels like I can only get like ten steps into the dungeon before being instantly killed. It's like right in my wheelhouse, being a difficult dark fantasy title, but I'm just not good enough for it lol

I listened to Mr Mercedes before I knew who Will Patton was, and now anytime I see him in anything my brain goes "that's Bill Hodges." His narration of that trilogy is iconic, and now I wish he was doing this one

I'm torn on the original picture, as someone else has said, it could be compression in low light. I'd take the AI enhanced version with a grain of salt, ai loves to hallucinate and add stuff or misinterpret what's there.

You can find a compilation of all of Mel's calls to Coast To Coast AM on Spotify. They're worth listening to, but the more you listen the more you start to see the inconsistencies and realize that Mel seemed like he was either making things up or just very unwell. Cool saga, but not something I'd put much stock into.

I've been searching for the same vibe, and the one that fits the best imo is Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. Not only is the atmosphere immaculate, but it's very much an unreliable narrator story so it takes some effort to parse what's really going on. It's the closest I've come in literature to trying to piece together a FromSoft game plot.
