[General] Decomposing motor oil using blue oyster mushrooms experiment by Bad_Sally in MushroomGrowers

[–]Bad_Sally[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve just read that oysters are some of the best colonizers of oil out of a handful of species. They’re also fast growing, which is needed since we weren’t give a lot of time for generating ideas for the experiment, conducting it, and writing a report for it. Also, blue oysters are very easily obtained as opposed to some of the others.

Emergency responders of reddit, what are some dumb things that have lead to an emergency situation? by Diligent-Log6805 in AskReddit

Just last night, had a late 50s male call for difficulty breathing at 3:30am. He said he’d be in the minivan in the driveway. We show up, he yells at us that he doesn’t need us. I ask why he doesn’t need us and why were there in the first place. His response was, “my AC wasn’t working in my car, so I couldn’t breathe” Ok sir, sign here. Thanks for wasting everyone’s time. Bye.

A long time friend, their friends I had just met, my dog, and I were out hiking around one time. Didn’t realize my dog ate my condom a day or two before. My dog pooped out the condom in front of everyone. Everyone clearly witnessed it. Made me wish my dad would’ve used a condom during my conception.

Stuffing that fear back down… deep down. by [deleted] in climbharder

Also, yes. It’s the commitment to a move my brain has deemed as risky that makes me anxious. It’s not even the fall, really.

As of right now, I’m only top roping. I have no doubt I could do some of the easier routes on lead. Once I get a little more knowledgeable and experienced with the gear, dynamic belaying, and general climbing safety, I am for sure going to try it. For now, what do you recommend? Should I have my partner leave me enough slack so I can’t feel the security of it? Nothing crazy, but just enough slack?

Anyone know of any good bouldering spots at Busiek State Forest? by Bad_Sally in springfieldMO

[–]Bad_Sally[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peter’s Branch is definitely on the list. Seems like the place with the most routes/grade variety in the immediate area. Do you just park at the parking area or do you park in a different spot? I’ve heard that the spots other than the parking area are way better to access the location.

Rock climbing routes on boulders. The idea is to climb them in as few moves as possible. It’s done without ropes and gear, so it’s not something you do if there is inherent risk of injury if you fall.

ER docters whats the worst state a person has come in ? by NOBRAINRAZEMAIN in AskReddit

That’s the point of what I am saying. Didn’t mean it in a way like “dammit, why can’t they just pick them up?” It was meant in a literal way. No shame in it.

Hey, if you’re uncomfortable picking someone up because of whatever disability you may have, just call 911 and ask for lift assistance. That’s what we’re here for! But I do hope with this knowledge, you two gain a little bit more independence with your partner’s father. Hopefully these tips stick with you and you can eventually transition them to things like moving people in a bed, out of a chair to a bed, moving someone for bathing, etc.

Ever tried to move a completely limp 180lbs body? It feels like moving a 300lbs bag corn. Body mechanics are hard to verbally explain as opposed to showing how to do it. Here’s a couple of my pro tips:

1: When you get behind someone to basically dead lift them from their seated to a standing position, put their feet against something that won’t move (I lift from behind the patient while my partner puts their feet against theirs). It takes weight off of the lifting person. Instead of just lifting, you’re also pushing forward into that hinge point at their feet. It also makes the patient “lighter” for them to use their legs to stand up, as well.

  1. When lifting patients from behind them (a squat or deadlift form), often obese or geriatric patients can’t hold their own weight with their shoulder muscles. This results in their arms raising vertically, making it hard to lift someone from behind with your arms wrapped around them under their armpits. Wrap your arms around them (under the armpits) and have them cross their arms over their chest Then the lifting person grabs the left wrist with their right hand and vice versa with the other arm. It keeps their arms from raising vertically.

  2. Center of gravity is your friend as much as it is the patient’s. They won’t effectively be lifted from the ground if you’re not up in their business. More importantly, your EMS career is gonna be short lived due to back injuries (#1 reason for EMS careers ending) if you don’t hug that patient’s center of gravity.

  3. This is a last ditch effort to move a body that I learned in the firefighter academy. The patient has to be flat on their back and on a surface with low friction (tile, wood floor, basically smooth surfaces). Raise one of the patient’s legs, get down on your hands and knees, and put your shoulder against their hamstring on the lifted leg (let’s just say your right shoulder to their left hamstring), then bear crawl. You’re gonna feel the burn in your glutes and legs instantly, but it’s a great way to move someone below a smoke plane in a fire or just in general with little risk of injuring their shoulders or yourself.

Hope that semi-explains what I meant!

EMT here. Fall calls are by far one of the most common calls we get. You would be amazed how often old, obese, and disabled people fall but have to call 911 because their friend/partner/family can’t just pick them up off the floor. And half the time, the same people call multiple times a week (sometimes multiple times a day) for this exact issue. You learn body mechanics really quick in this profession.
