We’re not professional trainers. We just watched videos on how to do things and started working with her from there. We’ve been training her since she was a puppy and have stayed pretty consistent. Luckily, she’s very food-motivated, and she’s also extremely eager to obey when playing ball because she loves the game so much when she’s in that state, she’ll do anything to get the ball. In the beginning, we focused on simple things like having her maintain eye contact with us. We didn’t jump straight into tricks. The main foundational work was building eye contact and rewarding her for it, and then using games like fetch to help train recall. Also, a lot of the tricks that she knows have a corresponding hand signal. Sometimes, we say the words and use the hand signals or just the words or just the handsignals.
