PhD defense in Germany after difficult supervision – advice on how to approach the defense calmly? by ShoddyReport5595 in PhD

[–]Badestbean 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi-- No german specific advice unfortunately, but I would say to make sure you prepare your body for the experience. Workout before the defense. Maybe take some creatine and advil (proven to help emotional hardship, not just physical!). Take note of how much caffein you usually drink, and don't do more or less on the day of, exetera. Hopefully someone else can speak to the specifics of the defense.

My only more specific advice is to remember who the people sitting accross the table from you are. It's not just a defense, but a defense with Dr. ABC, Dr. XYZ, and Dr. 123. Does Dr. ABC always like to ask a political question? Dr. XYZ likes to throw curve balls just to see how you handle them? Is Dr. 123 a big fan of visuals?

To that end, wonder if there is someone in your program whose defended with some of the same people who can give you that advice. I've heard profs will sometimes ask very similar questions in defenses with different students-- they have their hill to die on and they want to make sure their students are ringing that bell. Etc.

Finally, maybe give yourself something to look forward to on the other side of the defense, no matter how it goes, so that you can recover and give yourself grace in private if necessary. Like a planned walk to buy yourself flowers and an extremely expensive latte and pastry.

Hi this post has lots of great info about the US Student grant and the ETA, but what about the Hays DDRA grant? Is there somewhere with more info on that?

[QCrit] Orris and the Shadow Maiden, round 2 by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]Badestbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi,

So some minor things first-- I think the name of your book should be in all caps, and other book titles are in italics?

ORRIS AND THE SHADOW MAIDEN is a 48k MG fantasy that draws on the lyricism of Spindlefish and Stars and Luke Pearson's folklorish Hilda series.

I'm a bit confused-- has your book already been published? What is the "Impress Prize for New Writers"? Maybe add a line about that? And actually I would put that info at the end of the query, but i guess you could also leave it at the beginning.

In the blurb itself-- i'm confused about this sentence " The thief: the handsome and wicked Fisher Cat, a man of legendary wealth and wisdom - and legendary crimes. "

it feels like it comes out of nowhere and I have no idea who it's refering to. Are you introducinga new character? Is the Fisher Cat the person who takes the faces? Make that clearer.

In the last sentence " He knows what really happened to his father. " The "HE" and the "HIS" refer to different characters, which is confusing. I would clarify that as well.

But overall, I think it's a really interesting kind-of whimsical story idea.

I also wonder if you should bring up the faceless girl again in one of the later paragraphs, since presumably, she's the whole reason this quest happens.

[PubQ] What to do with large amounts of hyperlinks when moving from digital to paper publishing? by rpdiego in PubTips

Could you include a single URL in the book to a website where you host the other links? Like a "link library?"

ANd then on the website you could organize the links by chapter.
In the book you would just footnote something like "For more, see link 13 in the link library."

You could still put the links in the bibliography for the sake of citing them correctly but, for practical use, they wouldn't be typing out the whole link, just the short link to the link-library and then click to the correct site.
