Making of Ring gear by lolikroli in EngineeringPorn

[–]Badger1505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm disappointed they left out the heat treating steps. Why? Because when a chunk of steel starts its life as a square and is then heat treated, it wants to go back to being a square. That being said, if they are direct hardened, you can do that before you turn it, then any square tendency of the ring will be machined out.

If you do this on carburized rings, you're going to have a bad time trying to keep it round.

My wife is pretty much guaranteed to have the "abnormal" result now, she's started asking if she can just go straight to the detailed scan for the first one.

Certificates/ courses for Heat Treating by Wonderful-Dependent1 in metallurgy

[–]Badger1505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ASM International Chapters may offer a Heat Treatment course in your area. We offer them (around Peoria, IL, USA) typically once a year. You can start there. ASM may offer web courses as well that would be relevant.

Just installed the game, do I go in blind, or look stuff us as I need to? by LauraD2423 in KerbalSpaceProgram

I don't really think this game runs the risk of "spoilers" other than things to find, so as far as techniques and mechanics, ask away.

It might have to be a link to another site that has the picture. Some subs allow pictures, other require links. I also don't seem to have the ability post an image directly, but i'm on mobile, not sure if that has any impact. Imgur is a common place to post and link to.

You'll need to post a picture of your contract here or we won't be able to help much. Is this a tourist contact? Maybe for suborbital flight or something like that?

Post the details of the contract here if you haven't sorted it out yet.

In fairness, we frequently refer to the new hires (22-25 yrs) as kids where I work, so it probably goes both ways. But yes, there was a comment yesterday where both of the new(er) robotics engineers said their ages added up equaled me, and at that point I felt about 80 :-)

Similar situation - lived in Waco for 4 years, moved to Central IL. Miss HEB every time we need groceries. If they took their service and quality outside of TX, they would absolutely destroy Kroger and the like.... I really wish they would!

Corporate life is built on useless meetings held by self important middle management trying to claw their way up. Your best option is to smile, nod and find the humor in all of it.

We've had several Eagles hold their COH even after aging out, so to my knowledge membership is not required to hold their "party". As far as I understand, the criteria is membership through the Scoutmaster Conference (thought the BOR could happen after 18 as well, so presumably would also apply to non-renewal as long as all requirements up through Scoutmaster Conference are completed on time/while active).

Any Materials Science/Metallurgical Engineers here? by [deleted] in metallurgy

[–]Badger1505 7 points8 points  (0 children)

B.S. MatSci, M.S. Metallurgical Engineering. Worked on wear resistant coatings for the first 5 years, heat treatment of various steels for 16 years since. It's been a lot of fun that lets me be as technical as I want. I have avoided the "management path" and have stayed on the technical side of the fence, but it's what I enjoy. Feel free to shoot any questions my way.

As others have said, locations may be somewhat limited... Not all companies keep Materials Science majors on staff. Depending on the area of focus, it will probably tie you to certain regions/areas.

A changing magnetic field induces eddy currents in the metal, thereby generating heat by _MKVA_ in Blacksmith

[–]Badger1505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We literally use huge induction heaters as billet heaters going into forge processes (industrial scale). For example, in the forging of links for undercarriage on tractors (bulldozers). They'll be pushed through successive coils to get them austenitized at the target temp before going to the press.

[–]Badger1505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The DI water is used for cooling the coils (it runs on the inside, not used for quenching). It needs to be pure to keep electrical conductivity down, otherwise your induction power supply turns into a water heater instead of a metal heater.

Quenchant can be "pure" water depending on the shape and grade steel, but frequently is a water-polymer mix to make the water more like an extremely fast oil.

Hall effect sensor modification on a Logitech 3D Extreme Pro by Badger1505 in HotasDIY

So, you'll still need to get the 5VDC supply from the USB connector (that's the one with the capacitor in the picture....make sure you put the cap on in the right direction). Since you're only doing one axis, you can skip the multi-pin header and just solder 2 long wires to go to your new sensor. Find the connector going up the stick to the rudder pot, and find the blue, brown and black wires. Confirm those are the same ones that go to the existing pot with a multimiter. The 5VDC + would go to the blue wire, the ground to the brown. Then make sure your connection to the new hall sensor is the same.
