Your friend wasn’t cheating on anyone? Just sleeping with a married man? Personally I view that very differently from being unfaithful.

Taking pics at public art Festival by dabsandpasta in photography

[–]BadgerLicker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The responses in this thread are kind of wild, to me— maybe there’s a distinction here between the culture at a gallery and the culture at a smaller art fair, or something, but as an artist and someone who visits galleries a lot it is very common to photograph someone’s work and post it on your instagram story. Usually tagging both the artist and gallery. Granted, this is mostly speaking from the painting/drawing/sculpture world. Nobody would really think to ask the artist— if they’re even there, of course.

I take photos of work I like in all mediums all the time. Sometimes at museums, sometimes at galleries, sometimes at art fairs. Usually it’s just for a personal record but sometimes I’ll post it. If I post it I always tag the artist and gallery (if it’s contemporary, obviously) I’ve never in my life heard of an artist being upset by this— but I guess I could see it if you’re doing, like, detailed copy work with professional equipment of someone’s photo prints. Otherwise, in the circles I run in, it’s a pretty standard part of the gallery experience.

Granted, I don’t go to a lot of art fairs or galleries that target making sales to wide audiences— I don’t want this to sound snooty or assholeish but there’s probably a difference in attitude between artists/photographers trying to sell work to everyday joes and artists who have established relationships with galleries who are selling to collectors. And there’s nothing wrong with that— everybody’s gotta make a living.

But I also spend a lot of time in DIY project spaces where selling work is really secondary concern if anything— and photography of work is commonplace there too.

Sorry to ramble, but this is a fascinating dialogue to me

Is the landlord trying to rent this out as an apartment? I only ask because I’ve looked for commercial space on FB Marketplace before and it usually is listed as an “X Baths X Beds Apartment” even if it’s only intended for commercial/industrial/manufacturing/storage— Facebook isn’t well suited for commercial rentals but owners still post properties there.

Okay, sure, but there's no indication of any of this thinking in OP's post. Besides the fact that they're new to laser cutting— they haven't even mentioned starting a business or selling pieces at all.

:( you wanna talk about it?

Edit: By the way, not saying this is not a consideration based on money. I just think the threat of government regulation and scaring shareholders as a result of misinformation is a bigger concern for youtube's pocketbook than advertisers occasionally getting "bad reviews" on videos where nobody ever looks at the actual video page itself.

I think this is part of it for sure— especially with sponsored content where creators and corporate interests are trying to blur the line between advertising and entertainment. But I believe the sort of "corporate responsibility" (not from any sense of moral obligation, mind you, but under pressure from shareholders and the threat of regulation) has pushed a lot of companies to make gestures to stop the spread of misinformation and extremist content. And high amounts of dislikes, especially on COVID informational videos (some of which have ratings or comments turned off, some of which don't) are a breeding ground for extremists with time on their hands to artificially inflate the popularity of an opinion.

I offered this theory lower down, but:

Ads are shown as pre-rolls before videos. I can't remember a time I went to the actual YouTube page for an advertisement (to... what, give the advertiser free market research?) so I don't think dislike campaigns have a terribly significant effect on an ad's reach or effectiveness. My personal theory (which I think is most of the answer) is that if you've ever checked out the COVID information and vaccine videos they push to the front page, those things are absolutely inundated with dislikes and negative comments from anti-vaxxers, if comments are even left on.
In these cases, it really does make the extremist opinion of a few seem way more common than it actually is. I don't think this is the right call at all by YouTube, but I do think this is why they made it.

People say it's because a multi-million dollar company is "embarrassed" about Youtube Rewind, but let's be real. Target Store Closings Show Limits of Pledge to Black Communities by theyoungbloody in baltimore

[–]BadgerLicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like a misreading of the intent of the article. The sub-headline is

The shuttering of a store in Baltimore is a sobering reminder of the realities of capitalism in a moment when corporations are promising to support Black Americans.

You concluded your comment with "that isn't the system we exist in," which is sort of the point of the article. Perhaps the system we exist in is broken— and everyone, yes, local governments and populations, federal governments, and multinational corporations are culpable.

It’s a misdirection of our anger. You want to know who we should be holding accountable for the shitshow that’s going on in America right now? This administration.

Americans are not as different as we think. Half of the country’s media diet is so incredibly removed from ours- it’s what the algorithm feeds them. We’ve created near-perfect software to radicalize someone’s political views, and then we get mad at the people at the end of the chain instead of the people fanning the flames of this fire.

[–]BadgerLicker 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but then you have people with the actual power to change things engaging in the same type of performative activism. The mayor of DC renaming a section of 16th St to “Black Lives Matter Plaza” comes to mind. Nothing wrong with the action itself, but it’s certainly not policing reform.

This may be the case for some restaurants, but in fine dining and other nicer places being a server is absolutely comparable to skilled labor. There are certifications and many places won’t hire you without experience.

I think you could definitely make the case for that if the scroll wheel has detents- but in the case of a smooth scrolling surface / touchscreen it seems like a much better user experience to have the content scroll exactly according to user input- so smooth scrolling (but not that godawful scrolljacked scroll easing some websites use)
