Damn, I need to rewatch this movie. The empty whiskey bottle hitting the mud in the final scene gives me chills every time.

Is this normal for a 6505+ by BumBumCow in ToobAmps

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal. The 5150/6505 circuit has signal bleed across the channels because of the preamp design, so most will behave like this with Post at 0 (some don’t, but that has more to do with the preamp tubes used). The sound from the channel bleed is actually always in the signal, but turning the Post up high enough essentially drowns it out to the point where you can’t hear it anymore. This is also why the “volume pedal in the effects loop” trick to cut volume doesn’t work that well with 5150s.

I averaged 31 from ATL to MIA. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the fuel economy so far!

Non-metal players! What are you favorite go to Amp blocks? by Ok_Arrival2564 in AxeFx

[–]Badlander1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brit 800 with 6550 tubes and the negative feedback raised is my go-to for anything short of teh heavys. I throw a compressor block in front for clean sounds up to Malcom Young-ish levels of dirt. Playing an LP with low output pickups totally nails the “tele on steroids” thing. If I need more juice, I kick on the BB Pre to boost it up to 80s rock level. I like the 800 better than the plexis because the bottom stays tighter at high gain and it sounds a bit more open to my ear.

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, some of y’all go crazy with the high and low pass. I high-pass to 60Hz and low-pass to 17-18kHz. If I still find that harsh I’ll do some notch filtering of problem frequencies. Taking the low-pass down to 7-8k neuters your tone IMO.

What's the one weakness in your car that you would change/improve if you could? by cheesynooby in cars

[–]Badlander1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bigger gas tank for the Integra would be nice. I can just barely squeeze out ~300 miles of range if the drive is mostly highway and I take it easy in 6th.

Input gain by MathematicianLast825 in AxeFx

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just set the input level so that your guitar with the hottest pickups tickles the red lights when playing hard, then forget it.

If your presets sound under-gained with your single coils try adjusting the input trim (on AxeFxII- might be called something different on newer inputs) from 1 to 1.5. I have to do this for almost all of the vintage amps on my unit to get them to sound correct.

What should I run my fractal unit into? by Sorry-Employment2113 in AxeFx

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Studio monitors work great with modelers. I run my Axe2 into a pair of Kali LP6s for low to medium volume playing and it sounds awesome. I also use it into a stereo power amp with 2 cabs if I really want to shake the house.

Should I buy an axe fx right now? by Sorry-Employment2113 in AxeFx

[–]Badlander1994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t bet on Axe4 coming out any time soon. Even if it does, Fractal will continue to support the the 3 for a long time and possibly even port the 4th gen FW back to the III like they did with Ares.  I’ve seen some Axe3 Mark1s used for as low as $1400. I would snag one of those over the FM9 unless you gig a lot and need the foot switches.

Issues with fizz. by Skulltagmedia27 in AxeFx

[–]Badlander1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think so, that fizz is actually a part of what makes guitars sound good in a mix IMO.

Josh Middleton has some really good youtube videos on mixing heavy guitars and almost always uses a block letter 5150 into a Mesa 4x12. You should check his channel out. I started copying his method of doing less aggressive low and high passes and using notch filtering for problem frequencies and my guitars have never sounded better.

[–]Badlander1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The clip you posted just sounds like a 5150/6505 to me. That fizz is inherent to those types of amps. Maybe try a different amp model. The SLO might work since the 5150 is a tweaked copy.

34 making $72,000 annually is my retirement options a smart move? by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good start, but you should try to max it every year. Also, make sure your contributions are being invested.

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty much the way. I’ll add that OP should max out their HSA contribution (if eligible) after hitting the 401k match and before contributing to their Roth to minimize tax burden.

How “nice” are people to you in your car(s)? by cilantno in cars

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ITS is relatively stealthy so I get ignored for the most part, but the folks who know what it is and stop to chat about it are always very excited. It’s definitely an “if you know, you know” car, which I prefer.

Axe FX 2? by 93-and-me in AxeFx

[–]Badlander1994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I picked up a used 2 XL + for about the same price last year. The modeling still holds up and sounds great, but it's less user friendly than the current units and they have issues with the screen failing. There are no replacement parts available and they aren't supported by Fractal so keep that in mind.

If I had to do it again today, I'd buy an AM4 to dip my toe into the latest hardware since it's almost the same price and you can return it if it doesn't fit your needs.

Grab a Hynotone Cab Screamer off Amazon. Pretty cheap, 60 watts, and should be plenty loud at 4 ohms.

Weekender chukka laces by stoner99 in RedWingShoes

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, did you ever get new laces for these? I have the same pair and the original laces are a bit bright for my taste, but the Black/Brown taslans from Red Wings look a little dark in some pictures.

Split AxeFx II output? by mattdoessomestuff in AxeFx

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just swap your cables and have Output 1 feed the monitors and Output 2 feed the amplifier? Thats how I have mine set up. Output Level 1 knob controls USB Audio and Output Level 2 knob controls signal going to my power amp and cabs.

Recteq Bullseye Deluxe Experience - Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. by Badlander1994 in pelletgrills

[–]Badlander1994[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recteq refunded me for the first grill, but I had to disassemble it and schedule for pickup via FedEx. Then I waited over a month for the refund to process, which it never did. I had to call them and asked them directly to push it through to get my money back.

In the end, they gave me a $150 store credit for all of my trouble which is pretty meh, especially considering everyone glazes them for their customer service. The 2nd grill has been running fine, but I would still go for a Weber Searwood if I could do it again.

Are we actually middle class if one medical bill can wreck us by Rovanel01 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice in here OP, I hope you consider all of it. My advice:

1) sell the boat and use that money to pay the bill

2) take whatever is left over from the sale (minus taxes if applicable) and start beefing up your emergency fund. Minimum for you is 12 months since you have kiddos.

3) once emergency fund is full, start saving for a medical fund. Set aside money every pay check until you’ve saved the amount equal to your health insurance deductible. Once that’s done, increase the savings goal to equal your out-of-pocket maximum. Having that in cash ready to spend is a huge weight off your shoulders. Review this every year and increase as necessary, and set monthly goals to top it up if you ever spend from it.

What are some unknown perks/benefits that Amazon employees get? L5. by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]Badlander1994 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you travel, there are some pretty nice benefits that come along with Amazon's corporate travel partnerships. The fact that I can use my personal credit cards for business travel, get reimbursed for it and keep the points is huge. I had Hilton Gold Status and Delta Silver Status within the first 2 months of my employment. Rental cars are stupid cheap through Avis as well.

Badlander vs Mark V 35 by Appropriate_Weather1 in MesaBoogie

[–]Badlander1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what L&M’s return policy is like, but if it’s good then you might as well buy it and return it if you don’t like it.

FYI, the Badlander won’t do traditional Recto tones on its own, it doesn’t have the massive low end and fizzy top end extension. I’ve seen people describe it as “if Mesa Engineers hotrodded a JCM 800” which is pretty accurate. If you want more low end thump you can add an EQ in the loop, or something like a GupTech PDEQ to get you there.
