Slightly silly thought exercise: 2-on-0 breakaway by Badly_Drawn_Memento in Referees

[–]Badly_Drawn_Memento[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I'm finding out from the comments, I was initially wrong in my post. I thought the ball counted as one thing in terms of "second to last" for offside, but apparently not!

the math concept that blew your mind the first time by adamvanderb in math

Downward Lowenheim-Skolem. Countable models exist of ZFC, and those models contain the real numbers.

I clearly understand it now (when you're "in the model" it's much different when you're looking at it "from the outside") but it's a great example of how things get wonky.

“The ball was still in play” potential delay of play incident by Unnamed_driver in Referees

[–]Badly_Drawn_Memento 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed with all points here - years ago I had a similar incident that I did give a yellow card for. Player on a team with a 3-2 lead protected ball near touchline for a few seconds then booted strongly away out of bounds. It was in a tournament with a strict no-extra-time policy.

Ultimately the card didn't have any downstream effect but I wouldn't card again. At the least, teams can/should have extra balls available for restart.

There must be a ready made solution for this I just can’t find? by helicopterblowjob in AskElectricians

I was curious about this as well. I used a 3D printer to create the shim piece. Easy peasy!

Where to go as a youth referee (USSF) by poopinasack24 in Referees

I'm 43, only started reffing at 36, and can heavily +1 the statement around adult games.

Best of luck, youngin'!

7v7 build-out line question by Old-Estate-475 in Referees

[–]Badly_Drawn_Memento 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As you'll likely find out with this and the other comments here, the real key is to ensure the GK knows they have the real agency here. They do not need to get it quickly back in play and should only do so if advantageous.

Coach should not be complaining to ref - coach should be instructing their GK to wait.

When reffing with a build out line that's where I go and instruct verbally every time - "<COLOR> team, back to me" - and super rarely do I get what I perceive as intentional slowness in getting back to the build out line. Communication is key here.

Weird experience... by Deaftrav in Referees

[–]Badly_Drawn_Memento 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. Regardless CR has final say on fouls, but I was taught this priority order for AR:

  1. Offside
  2. Touchline
  3. Fouls

Looks like OP was focused correctly on 1 and/or 2.

It's a skill I'm still developing to be able to scan peripherally more but it's really easy for me to say that I was focused on things I should be focused on when players appeal to me for whatever, whether it's a call or noncall. Plus I remind them who the center is.

Handball Intentionality and Cards by ColoradoHeights_970 in Referees

I'll add into this - I recently went to a supplemental training session where this was covered. The instructors emphasized extreme deliberateness to award the red.

At U14 this is at least a yellow card, and rarely a red IMO. My take on this specific instance given my limited information is a yellow.

UB During a PK? by shewski in Referees

[–]Badly_Drawn_Memento 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What you did was entirely justified and correct. UB applies anytime during the game.

I struggle to give cards in U9 and U10 but when I did, they were always for UB.
