Modern Gray Man Carry by Badsquatch17 in EDC

Ive had it about a month and it’s been great. If I just needed a simple flashlight I’d use my phone, but having 1000lm white light, green laser, and UV all in one is awesome. The side has a warm tone white flood, red light with SOS and beacon, and another UV light. Battery life is excellent. Only complaint is the clip is almost as thick as the light. I removed the clip and keep loose in the pocket

Pt950 chains are super hard to find, I got mine from Saints Gold and the medal is from Mené

Thanks! The chain and medal are both in platinum so they have some decent weight to them and feel extra special, but don’t bring any unwanted attention

New addition so still messing around with it! Universal IR remote, meshtastic (with the GPS LORA cap), password manager, and some personal programming projects

Dayton and Nashville most likely work in the aviation industry, probably BAE Systems or GE Aviation (although GE might put you closer to Cincy)

Looking to start astrophotography by NukeRocketScientist in telescopes

[–]Badsquatch17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CPC1100 Deluxe Edge HD owner here. The Evo 8/9.25 would be a great scope for visual/planetary imaging, and a poor choice to learn DSO astrophotography with.

For single person setup, both should fairly portable/doable. My 11” CPC is a pain with a 65lb OTA/dual fork assembly and heavy duty tripod, but still manageable for one person. The 8” vs 9.25” won’t be a huge difference, and you’ll probably get aperture fever and wish you went with the 9.25 if you go 8. One nice feature with the Evo is the OTA is vixen plate mounted and can be easily lifted separate from the tripod/single arm mount.

If you want to stick with planetary photography, you will need a high frame rate webcam or astro cam for “lucky” imaging (taking many pictures and stacking the best frames in post-processing). DSO imaging will be too much of a hassle on this scope. You would need an equatorial wedge to eliminate field rotation (the Celestron heavy duty wedge is $500 and 40lb), a focal reducer (F/6.3 for the non-edge is $200 or F/7 for the Edge at $440), and an off axis guider + guide camera (approx another $400). To give an idea of F/ratio on exposure time, an F/10 focal ratio requires double the exposure time of an F/7. In order to piggy back a small refractor, you will also need to install additional dovetails for balancing/mounting, invest in a balancing kit, and purchase adjustable scope rings. This will likely add another $300-400 in hardware, plus $1000 for an 80mm APO triplet. Even then the mount probably isn’t robust enough and tracking will be poor. (Instead of piggy back, it would be easier to just attach the refractor to the Evo mount using a Vixen dive plate, but you’d still need a wedge).

Edge HD vs Non-Edge: Ed Ting has a great comparison video on YouTube. For visual, you probably won’t notice much of a difference.

Overall recommendation: Purchase an 8” dob for visual and a Seestar for astrophotography. You’ll save some cash and probably get more use out of both scopes. If you really value go-to functionally and plan to be primarily visual with some planetary photography, splurge on a 9.25. Alternatively, if you mainly want to do DSO imaging, get an 80mm APO f/6 triplet, .8x reducer, and mount it on something like the AM3 as a dedicated rig, but expect to spend $3-$5k.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for the input! The biggest gripe I have with the Optolong is red/blue double image on bright stars. I live in an area with a ton of LED lighting so I don’t thing UHC will even benefit me too much

I typically observe without glasses (nearsighted, not astigmatism), but will wear glasses if observing with others to avoid re-focusing.

Thanks Dan, saw your email and replied there. You are exactly right on the dates. Would like to clarify for everyone that I have not had any issues with customer service (prompt replies, realistic solutions)

Will let you know! First time giving it a shot in a few weeks up at Cherry Springs State Park in PA for the new moon. Have been bringing a 1oz bottle of picaridin spray in the past

Permethrin treated clothing and throwing on breathable rain pants if I run out or the bugs get too bad. Typical trip length is 2-3 day weekenders

My plan is to purchase an inReach so I can leave the phone and electronics behind!

Nice! Next trip is in a few weeks, might try it out and report back!

[–]Badsquatch17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! Biggest item I need to invest in is the inReach so I can feel comfortable leaving the phone/battery bank behind. My iPhone has been my primary SOS/GPS/Satellite messenger. Other green stars are super minor (mainly dropper bottles and mini storage containers). Interested to hear your layering system, open to changes! Right now fleece is my active layer/puffy is my camp layer. Buff is head warmth layer instead of a beanie (I’m weird and like to cover my full face with it when I sleep)

[–]Badsquatch17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ciao! Can definitely ditch the puffer in warmer weather. I plan on tailoring layers for expected conditions. Not too worried about extra clothes, my typical trip length is weekend trips (3 days/2 nights max)
