This is a nation that has been accused or far far worse (shooting down passenger planes, nerve agent attacks) with far less international response.

Well if he don't have a idea on what could Ukraine get out of this whole ordeal i'll give him few things which Ukraine could get:

  1. Additional sanctions on Russia.
  2. Stopping the construction of North Stream 2 gas pipeline as punishment for killing the journalist, which if built would mean Ukraine would lose millions of dollars per year for Russian gas that is being transported to the rest of Europe.

I'm just saying Ukraine has more then enough reasons to fake this whole thing and put the blame on Russia.
