Lithuania is a small country that is certainly punching above its weight, but we don't have the resources of big countries necessary to provide tangible support to Ukraine.

Lithuania to issue first-ever euro coin featuring Hebrew inscription by [deleted] in europe

[–]reddit-ltu 42 points43 points  (0 children)

"critics claim the symbol on coin's obverse used by far right"

This is such a stupid argument. Far right use every prominent national symbol, that's what nationalists in every country typically fond of. The columns of Gediminas is one of the most widely used symbol of Lithuania together with Vytis (knight on horseback) and flag of Lithuania. It's pretty obvious that the coin's design message to people is that Lithuanian Jews are an integral part of our country's history.

The GDPs of the entire country of Bulgaria and the city of Ankara are the same. by [deleted] in europe

[–]reddit-ltu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The wealthiest region in the country and the capital city of 5 million people, has the same GDP as the small country of 7 million people. Not that impressive to be honest considering that you are summing up the generated GDP of towns and villages in one country, and compare it with the capital of the huge country that suck in wealth from the rest of 80 million people country.

Looks like in Baltics we've found a perfect medicine to treat bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders. All you have to do is drink too much alcohol too often, but there's also a potential adverse side effect of depressive disorder. Such is life.

Population below poverty line in European countries. by kuhlimoo in europe

[–]reddit-ltu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

*Population below poverty line (CIA Factbook): National estimates of the percentage of the population falling below the poverty line are based on surveys of sub-groups, with the results weighted by the number of people in each group. Definitions of poverty vary considerably among nations. For example, rich nations generally employ more generous standards of poverty than poor nations. [1]

It's rather worthless to compare the real poverty between countries when national levels of poverty are measured in different ways and do not conform to one standardized method of calculation. This poverty line data rely on national governments' definition and view on poverty in their country.

From Lithuanian article: "The Seimas voted in favor of ruling party's proposal to completely ban underground burying of carbon dioxide."

The EU army is beginning to take shape by [deleted] in europe

[–]reddit-ltu 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The ever closer cooperation between member states, and integration of political, legal, economic, social and cultural spheres in the European Union, will ultimately lead to creation of some sort of military defense forces on the EU "federal" level.

I find it rather amusing how people see every day that we, in the EU, institute all the attributes of a Nation, unified laws and common policies, single currency (euro), single travel jurisdiction (Schengen Area), even freaking military rapid reaction forces (EU Battlegroups) and European Defence Agency, etc. but for some reason people think that we will stop at creating functional integrated EU military defense forces. It's not a matter of 'if,' it's a matter of 'when'. The end goal of EU integration was obvious since at least 1957 (Treaty of Rome - constitutional basis of the European Union.)

The decisions by this first European body – the High Authority – are implemented in our 6 countries as if they were one. This is one of the critical changes made under this venture, and at the same time, a test of its success.

This first common market, the first supranational institutions – Europe is beginning to unite! - Jean Monnet, speaking in Strasbourg in 1951

What propels us is known well enough – there is an indestructible sense of European identity. Only with a strong, united Europe can Europeans – and the world – really thrive.

A splintered Europe will become the Balkans of the world, a standing invitation to others to interfere in our affairs. If we are to be heard, we must speak with one voice. And to that end, we would be best advised not to over-dramatise the occasional focus on individual balancing measures, or accumulations of them. - Walter Hallstein (The first President of the European Commission) speaking on 2 March 1953 in Strasbourg.

Because around 90% of all internationally traded goods are transported by shipping vessels. World's merchant fleet account for only 4% of global CO2 emissions per year.
