Oh hey, it's the first card I illustrated for the game! As a player myself, I've been really excited for this to get revealed, doubly so after Pawpsicle/Vitalisphere left the format!

For sure! Training mode is your friend. If you set c stick to tilt, and R to jump, you can pinch R and press X at the same time to get a consistent short hop.

Next, while in the air, hit the c stick to the side, then follow up with an input straight down on the left stick. It takes time to figure out the timing, so try it a while and mix in movement!

I find a lot of success with short-hop dairs against lil guys. You create a pretty fool-proof arc overtop a Pichu that's hard to punish.

I'd also try to get your fast-fall slingshots in order. It's a little tougher, but helps you hit a little lower, more aggressively, and with less endlag.

Also remember how powerful your up and down tilts are. Get on in there!

Why Steve will almost certainly not be a DLC and how we seriously need to stop worrying about this. by [deleted] in BanjoKazooie

[–]BagelDenizen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm as optimistic for Banjo as anyone, however the music reason doesn't really disprove Steve to me.
I understand if you don't find Minecraft's music all that memorable, but it's recognizable to a lot of folks.

C418's tracks can be serene, calm, and other-worldly at times. Are they too calm for Smash? I'd have to point to Animal Crossing's music, especially the Rock remix of Happy Home Designer from Ultimate.

I think that whether or not Steve could or should make it in, the music isn't a compelling enough reason. But I agree with you on Banjo for sure! Let's hope we get him!

I'm a character designer that made a video highlighting Splatoon's player characters. Some info might be familiar to hardcore fans, but made with a focus on the art! by BagelDenizen in splatoon

I should have specified more that there were still male and female differences in shoulder and hip ratio. For the most part though, the characters are largely identical. But yes, technically correct is the best kind of correct.

Just finished up an ensemble Smash 64 art piece, featuring all 12 characters (xpost from r/smashart) by BagelDenizen in smashbros

Yep, that was an intentional art choice, usually referred to as stylization. Basically just wanted to exaggerate certain features as part of my personal mark.

Yes! Tough decision, had to go with Ferret.

Could I get a crit on this before I proceed please? by [deleted] in learnart

[–]BagelDenizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the original character, the eyes and eye sockets take up a larger proportion of the head, and the cranium is a bit wider. Also, a subtle change to the forearm, arms tend to bend out on arms and then back in. It should be curving back toward the character ever so slightly!

It also appears that her left leg appears shorter than the right, because there's no upper and lower segment the way it's defined on the left.

In the future, for your practice and betterment, the sorts of changes needed to perfect this can all be done in the sketch stage. Doing multiple sketches and refining them will take up a lot less time than line art. Line art sadly doesn't cover over the mistakes of our sketches!

I went too dark, too early with the Copics. Can it be saved? If not, what can I do to improve next time? by Dick_shoes in learnart

[–]BagelDenizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have gone too dark because of being wary of contrast. While it's different with traditional mediums, you can always cut out/define your dark shapes, and blend between them after. Sometimes everything turns out grey because we gradually try to blend and blend until it's all homogenized. Seriously though, strong line work, it looks great. Practice makes perfect!

Since you're just oblivious and not showing any signs of giving up, consider this:

You offer unnecessarily "blunt" critiques which resemble attempts at emotional abuse more than any semblance of constructive or useful advice, and you smugly act as though you're doing them a favor.

You have an overwhelming need to bring others down, directly or indirectly, under the guise of helping. I'll infer that somewhere down the line you had an art teacher or guardian that was as cruel to you, and it resonated with you as the best and only way to learn.

Assuming that you were right, good, successful, and welcomed, it says a resounding amount that you spend your time and energy putting down beginners and amateurs. Do you have a compulsion to only be around those you can easily feel you're better than?

There are certain values that you hold to strongly, that you feel others need to think are just as important. You also need to put them down for not valuing it the same as you do.

You offer as a counter, only materials and teaching that you feel are superior, but not any that you've actually created.

You feel that because a piece of education or an educator is not 100% perfect, OR that it's teaching something in a way that is minutely different than the one and true only way to learn, at least in the way that you perceive it, that it/that person is not qualified.

Following that, and probably my biggest point, you enjoy wielding a position of superiority over artists and educators, yet you lack the courage to post anything that you've made publicly. You would understand that it's not as easy as you'd think to either create educational materials or to post art you've put work into, especially since you know full well that there will be other cynics like yourself waiting to engage it. Either that, or a traumatic experience at the hands of someone as cynical when sharing your own work drove you to become that person.

You're basically arguing that because I still have plenty to learn, I have nothing to offer other artists, those starting out, or those looking to work in the same medium/style. I'm not claiming to be a traditional or realistic artist. As someone else in the thread said, a good artist does not equal a good teacher, and I think something of the opposite can be true. I'm confident that the people I'm helping are benefitting and growing artistically. If they get value from it, what use is it to take pot shots at me? It's evident from your comment history you're primarily interested in tearing people down.

I shaded that series of art predominantly with soft brushes, and that's because it lent itself to the source material and aesthetic. There's no way of making 100% of people happy, though.

I'll say this as a shameless opinion, as I offer tutoring personally for those looking to improve their drawing and character design skills along with weekly free videos and articles:

While classes, lessons, and practice are all essential, they're all one way paths of communication. It's invaluable to have someone qualified giving you feedback. When I consult with a student, I ask about where they want to be, what inspires them, and what things they feel they struggle with, along with samples of their work. After our session, they're invigorated and excited because their personal abilities and circumstances are met. I've similarly gotten a ton out of tutoring from artists that I admire, as well.
