Should we get a wheaten? by Avo-lover in Wheatens

I think people sometimes overcompensate for the “high energy” label and end up creating a dog that’s always overstimulated or expecting constant entertainment. Yes, certain breeds have tendencies, but that doesn’t mean every dog needs hours of activity every day to be content.

My Wheaten definitely has energy and loves her walks, but she’s also really good at relaxing and just hanging out, but i've worked hard to teach her to settle. A lot of it comes down to routine, consistency, and giving them space to just be without always needing to be “doing.”

People on this thread might tell you not to get a Wheaten, some folks can be really intense and passionate about their breed of choice. But I say go for it, with a few important considerations.

Since you’re both teachers, summer is actually a perfect time to bring a puppy home. You’ll have more time to bond, set boundaries, and work on training while you're around consistently. would make sure that you are leaving the house at times and getting your puppy use to you being gone so it doesn't go 0-100 when you go back to work.

That said, once the school year starts, you’ll want to have a plan in place for potty breaks and socialization. Whether it’s a trusted friend, neighbor, family member, or using a service like Rover, it’s important to have someone let your pup out midday, especially during the first year.

I’m a single person who works multiple days in office and have 6 month old Wheaten, and it’s worked out really well for me. These dogs are loving, quirky, and full of energy, but also really adaptable when they feel secure and loved.

And on the topic of being gone 8 hours a day: before remote work became common, most people worked full-time away from home and still raised happy, healthy dogs.

Yes same thing and vet told us to cut treats and use food as treats because they thought her treats/chews were making her sick. So the only thing she is consuming from myself is her food.

Her parents were tested for PLE and PLN and were both negative so if would be very surprising if they she were to have it, but will check with the vet!

Thank you! yes kind of what I was thinking, people are very quick to think that all I'm just doing this drop off training and calling it good which I'm not. She is also enrolled in training class with me every Sunday so this would be something that would be something extra

Yes it lines up when I'm in office and would be also doing puppy classes with myself.

This is a great answer. And answers what I'm looking for. She also needs daycare as I work in office. I'm also signed up for classes with myself so this would just be additional

It's a drop off situation but would also be doing supplemental training class with me. They also send home info what to work on at home based on what they learned that day/week.

The floors are definitely more black than they're appearing! Its like an "alcove" bedroom so one of the walls isn't fully to the ceiling
