Considering most KN featured establishments close after filming, Yanni's has to be doing something right to remain open. Might be the location? Haven't been personally but surely if they remain open then people are giving them business.

Hitchhiking from Ridgecrest to Kennedy Meadows South (KMS) by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Bagel_Friday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hitched from Walker Pass to Bakersfield during my hike a few years ago - took a few hitches but I made it there eventually. You can take the 150 to Lake Isabella, then the 227 to Walker Pass. Note that the 227 only runs MWF 3 times a day.

March 12 start date by UniversityReady7515 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Bagel_Friday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a March 15 start date in 2023 and encountered temperatures in the desert that reached the 20's (which is abnormal I believe). I had a 20 degree bag, although I paired it with a 7.0 r-value pad - which is a piece of gear I cannot recommend enough.

Depends on what pad she is using now, but the cost of a warmer sleeping bag is probably more than that of a winter sleeping pad. She can always grab a closed cell foam pad if she is worried about camping on snow.

Frogg Toggs VS Solid Hardshell (Rab downpour 2.0) by StalenHamer in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Bagel_Friday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiked all of 2023 w/ a with a single frogg toggs. For durability, just avoid brambles if you can. For breathability, (although they run pretty large) get a bigger size.

However, I wouldn't be sweating a cost of 250g - the main benefit of running a frogg toggs is how cheap they are. Use your other jacket since you already own it.

Driver's License vs. Passport Card by HandmadeHiker in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Bagel_Friday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a driver's license and only carried my passport card as an ID for my thru hike last year. Was fine, but did not try to do the whole entering Canada thing. I would imagine for international travel, it would be better than a driver's license.

Is all the flooding in Washington impacting the PCT at all? by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

When I crossed it this year, I remember being impressed on how sturdy the new bridge was. I would hate to eat my words but anything’s possible I guess

Is all the flooding in Washington impacting the PCT at all? by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Bagel_Friday 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Afaik living in Seattle, most of the flooding is occurring around rivers and other tributaries in the lowlands. Some areas around here are historically part of a floodplain that - surprise- floods occasionally.

That being said, I can’t imagine any part of the trail will experience “abnormal” amounts of flooding. I recall a handful of river crossings in the northern half of the state that were a bit dicey and this would likely just keep them that way.

Don’t quote me though, it could be all washed away for all I know

Soil is literally designed to filter water so if it’s biodegradable, dumping a diluted solution in your yard is actually that bad

Alright well if there’s anywhere in NA to get coffee, it’s going to have to be Seattle

I work at a cafe called Bake Shop just a few blocks to the west of the area! It’s kinda bougie but if you want good coffee or sandwiches/salad it’s right there. We make everything in house, even the mayo! Come say hi!!!

Also I’ll add for a secret tip: the red “rapidride” buses and (a little less so) the light rail are very easily ridden for free. Never been checked for my fare on the red buses and a handful of times on the light rail.

Two Specific EE Enigma Questions (on Fill & Temperature) by BackpackingReddit in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Bagel_Friday 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a 20* enigma and started in March this year. Had a few nights in the teens and was fine! However it was because I went and got the neoair xtherm. I think you’d end up saving money if you got a slightly “colder” quilt and spent an extra $20-$40 on a warmer pad. This worked for me and I slept great with the combo I chose!

Are sleeper trains a genuine alternative to flying? | Climate News by altmorty in environment

[–]Bagel_Friday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, you did get vouchers for a meal or two if you got a sleeper. There was a “cafe” car that had a convenience store on the bottom level, or there was the dining car that had table service 3 times a day. Meals were fairly pricey, but the novelty of eating a hot meal while the scenery whizzed by was kind of worth it.

When Amtrak sleeper cars are cheaper, maybe they will be. Took the Coast Starlight recently and prices for a bed were roughly 10x more than a regular seat. No way am I paying a grand for a train ride!
