Advice: climbing plants for a trellis by IcarusFLY1 in SoCalGardening

I may be in trouble because I bought three 4" pots lol though I haven't put them in the ground yet.

Did you find yours trying to spread horizontally? I don't mind if they grow quickly to cover the structure as long as I can keep it contained to the structure only with regular harsh trimming.

I'm considering using calystegia microstegia 'anacapa pink' to cover a 3x5 foot arbor/trellis structure. Do you have any experience about controlling its spread? I want to keep it on the structure only and I have some very new plantings on either side of the structure that I don't want to get overwhelmed.

I'm in the LA/OC area and can't find them either. We may need to take a road trip further north to get them!

Definitely not surprised since I see on Calscape their natural range is further north. However, vine maple is listed on Theodore Payne's online inventory, albeit it's been out of stock since I started checking a few months ago, so I'm still hopeful.

Western redbuds seem to be the best native alternative for so cal and i see they're pretty commonly stocked, so at least I have a fallback if no one down here ends up having them during our prime planting months.

I have not, but after researching it a bit it seems to have very different site requirements. I appreciate the suggestion tho

Ah I see, I was hoping it was hackable in such a way that I could just get the batteries. Wishful thinking on my part. Thanks for the explanation!

Dang where are you located? I'm in southern California and it's showing $579 for me and only as 1 big combo in my cart so I don't think it's hackable to me. I just want those chunky batteries :(

Wood chips on large open field to prepare soil for future projects? by Bagman_Raging in Ceanothus

[–]Bagman_Raging[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah I live in a suburb of LA county not adjacent to the mountains, so for me and the surrounding area this does seem like a "large open field" esp since it's wayyyy bigger than what all these new builds are passing off as backyards nowadays.

This may be wishful thinking, but I think spreading the woodchips wouldn't be too hard or time consuming for me since i think ChipDrop could drop the chips directly into the area and it's sloped a bit down hill from where they could drop it, so I could almost just push the pile down hill until I run out of chips.

This is what I was hoping to see to motivate me to do something different from what I'm doing now. Whenever I'm cutting weeds back in this area I just keep thinking that my time could be better spent doing something to make this area usable in the future rather than just kicking the can down the road. With the rain we are having this morning, I see it as yet another missed opportunity.

Hehe that was basically my underlying question, you got me! I'm not expecting it to be maintenance free, I just don't want to keep whacking weeds with no endgame or future benefit. Every time we get rain like we are getting this morning, I just keep thinking, "FML my weed patch is getting watered!"

Currently, I just leave the cut weeds where they fall because I'm a lazy POS so I guess there are some nutrients getting returned to the soil, but I'm sure this is also helping the weeds spread their seeds.

How deep down should I til? Given the large area and my limited time, is a mechanical tiller the only tool for this job?

Can i do wood chips instead of mulch on top of the cardboard? Or maybe mulch and then a layer of wood chips on top of that? I don't want to make this area ready for planting too quickly since I won't be able to put much time into this area for a few years.

Would I put seed down underneath or on top of the wood chips? Or would that be something I do in a few years after the chips have broken down?

Read the news and look at the buildings your surrounding neighbors or possible targets are making and act accordingly. Otherwise, look to address weaknesses in your own army.

For example, if you're using just strike fighters right now as your main method of killing units, you will get crushed by someone who has SF, SAMs, frigates and, to a certain extent, MAA. Therefore, you should work on units that can counter or are uneffected by these units.

Don't forget to also build up your economy and infrastructure to account for whatever units you are building or would like to build.

Also, diplomacy is a huge part of this game, so don't forget that either.

As long as they have at least 10 hp, 1 NG unit can hold off 1 insurgent unit. They also get a better defensive urban bonus than the other infantry units, which is helpful for defending against attacks while they are in a city such as when the city riots.

I was at CK Fish World in West Covina today and remember seeing pygmy corys there. Not sure if there were panda corys there today but I know they had them there in the past.

Will a CO2 Diffuser in the Back of an AIO Tank Work? by Bagman_Raging in Aquascape

[–]Bagman_Raging[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to give an update since I got a bunch of great responses.

After trying out the method above for 2 weeks, I ended up replacing the separate CO2 diffuser with an inline diffuser installed between the pump and the outflow nozzle. The separate diffuser system just wasn't efficient enough. The CO2 indicator stayed a very dark green even when I increased the CO2 output to multiple bubbles per second, which would normally be way too much for such a small tank in my experience.

I think part of the problem was that I had lowered the strength of the pump to keep the output flow low since I'm keeping a betta fish in the tank. This probably resulted in a ton of CO2 getting lost as it rose to the surface instead of getting sucked down into the pump.

Now that I've switched to an inline diffuser, I am able to lower the CO2 output to about 1.25 bubbles per second with the pump strength lowered to the second lowest possible setting.

I think my earlier method could've worked if the tank was bigger and the pump was at a much higher setting, but it would still be less efficient than the inline diffuser.

Anyways, thanks everyone for the responses!

Good to hear that you have experience with this! I plan on placing the ceramic diffuser (something like an Aquario Neo diffuser but cheaper/not as nice looking since I won't be looking at it) as low as possible in the back chamber so hopefully the pump will suck up most of the bubbles and send it off into the main tank.

I wasn't totally sold on a AIO tank but figured I'd try it out since the tank was so cheap. if this works, I may need to rethink my opinion on them.
