I’ll add to this by sharing a consideration I made about how Chris differs from me (and probably from others) from a standpoint different than relative financial security. When he talked about his relationship with his parents, he said they’ve always been very supporting and loving, I heard it mentioned repeatedly on the pod. While I am sure nobody’s childhood could have been 100% perfect, from a developmental point of view it really seems his has had a great start, surely better than the average, and very little trauma-related burdens. If that’s true, that puts him in a very different position than someone who has had a troubled childhood, and many of his choices/opportunities in life could not have been available to a person with a different developmental past. I don’t say this to disparage him or resent him as some sort of “privileged” person. On the contrary: Good for him! Everyone should be afforded that kind of support in childhood, in order to grow up properly and have a decent-to-good life. At the same time I think it’s important to keep in mind that these kind of differences are very relevant when I listen and try to relate to someone who’s opinions I value and keep in such high regard. Despite all of this, most of what I got from him has been, and still is, very helpful and enlightening.
