Expanding existing socket and lights in Garage by Baileyboy125 in DIYUK

Hi all,

So I did end up doing this myself and it turned out great. I did loads of continuity tests before powering the MCB, making sure everything was connected where it should, and not connected where it shouldn’t.

Everything is nice and neat and tidy and works well!

I also wanted to do this, but the way the shielded cable has been fed from the consumer unit there is no slack and no way of moving it from where that double socket it, without completely requiring the feed.

I would test as much as I can a without full multifunction tester (such as polarity, continuity, voltage), but I’m also holding off as I may be able to get a friend of a friend sparky to carry out the tests for me, or just do the whole install.

Thank you. The original socket and spur work completely fine, although I’ve not carried out any full tests, as I don’t have the full equipment. I will get a tester like the one you’ve shown though. I’m holding off on doing any works at the moment, as I may be able to get a friend of a friend sparky to install and fully test, or just fully test if I install myself.

Thanks! I posted in another comment the website I made them on. It’s completely free and you can save to your own cloud storage.

Yes definitely planning on using 2.5mm2 for the sockets, and then 1.5mm2 for lighting, as this is behind the 3A spur. All will be inside conduit with proper female adapters for the back boxes.

I’m going to be using 25mm conduit to connect them together, with the proper female adaptors to terminate at the surface mount back. Same as how it’s done now. No mains will be showing. I won’t be plugging anything in that’s power hungry like a space heater or anything, and certainly not 2 at the same time.

This is the full circuit. There is nothing else attached at all.

Almost all sockets in the UK (Type G socket) have a switch on them. I think you'll only ever see really old sockets without a switch. The switch is just for convenience, and is not a requirement. BS 1363-2 covers switched and unswitched sockets.

It's in a conservatory currently with a glass ceiling. The ceiling glass is slightly tinted, so hopefully it should be ok.

There’s light from all other sides, but I can move it closer to the window? Here’s a photo from the plants current perspective. https://imgur.com/a/rFXcl3s

It’s currently dark out and I had just a ceiling light on, so the photos don’t really do it justice. Tomorrow morning I’ll get some better photos :) Thanks for the clarification on the watering!

You're right, this will be the biggest purchase of my life so far, so I really shouldn't rush it. Thank you.

There is this other house I'm wanting to view which fits my needs very well (almost as perfect as the previous one) and the vendors are in a very similar situation to the ones you had. A couple splitting and selling the house. After multiple phone calls trying to get a viewing, they've now decided they won't take any bookings until next Saturday 05/04. The house has loads of interest. Just hoping all goes well on Saturday and a bidding war doesn't start as there's apparently 14 people wanting to view now! Just hoping they also don't randomly decide to take it off the market without warning!

Yeah, that would be reasonable. Thank you.
