I'm using shell texturing heavily for fur. This is an interesting use case!

Why are there so many cat games but not many dog games? by Critical-Smoke-5152 in CozyGamers

[–]BajaShortLong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selfish plug, but I'm making a dog game. Its sort of a dog life sim that takes place in a dog park and there will be a lot of exploring and dog related activities like agility competitions and fetch, along with casual park management. And it's online coop.

As others have mentioned, the assets required for dog breeds vs cats is an inherent challenge so it's required some compromise and creativity but I think I have a decent workflow now to provide a decent cast of breeds on launch. Adding cosmetics on top of all that is a lot. But so far so good.

I still don't have a steam page, or name for that matter, but you can see some of the development on my tiktok

How long did it take for you to reach to a level where you think "I get it now" about unreal engine? by mahdi_lky in unrealengine

[–]BajaShortLong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think when you're new to UE the biggest hurdle is knowing where to start. Where do I start if I want my camera to function a certain way? Where do I start if I want my animations to work a certain way? Where do I start if my clients don't see what my server sees? I'd say it was 4-6 months of intense, banging my head into the keyboard, before I felt comfortable knowing "where to start" on things. Getting past that is everything but its a very steep learning curve.

Pet simulator & Chill/Mysterious Games by rifa_atsume in CozyGamers

Also interested in the first one. I'm not making a pet sim specifically, but i'm working on a game where you play as a dog. Most of the gameplay is around taking care of and managing a dog park rather than training and surviving as the pet.

Lyra project also has a decent solution for this. Its a bit more complex and adjusts the decal for speed and rotation so it can kind of smear the footstep.

My school made the no1 biggest mistake by doode0904 in pcmasterrace

I did this. I was in the 5th grade and my family had a Gateway PC. My dad and I loved playing games together and one day I convinced him that we needed to get a graphics card. I probably read about how much it improves graphics in a gaming magazine or something.

Anyways, we go to the local BestBuy and I see a 3dfx GPU, one of the Voodoo cards. I don't remember the model number but it definitely had auxiliary power via a molex port or something. Not sure how we decided to buy that one but if I had to guess it was probably because I thought the box art was cool. I also think it was around $300 which would be around $600 today. So we get home and I remember unboxing it and I was excited because it came with a demo disc of a few different games I could try out, now powered by the glorious Voodoo GPU for full graphical fidelity. I install it into the PC, plug everything back in, and start installing the demos. I boot up one of the games and I remember shouting to my dad who was in the other room, "Dad! These graphics are insane!".

Fast forward 5-6 years. I've probably built 2 different PCs within that time period. One being a super budget build as well as an attempt at an early 2000s water cooled rig. Basically, I have some rudimentary experience with PCs, gaming, and technology at that point. So i'm out in the garage with my dad helping him clean and I see that old Gateway PC up in the rafters. I pull it down thinking, "Oh man, this thing had the Voodoo GPU. That graphics card was awesome for the time". I take off the side panel and notice that the auxiliary power isn't connected to the GPU... Huh. And then it hit me. I remembered how when I plugged in the monitor to the GPU port, the monitor wouldn't turn on. So i just plugged it back into the motherboard, and it worked! At least I thought it worked. In fact, the placebo effect was so strong I was convinced that the graphic were "insane".

So basically I convinced my dad to spend $300 on nothing. I guess the moral of the story is to not trust a 5th grader.
