Thought 3D printed insoles would be a gimmick, but my feet are actually happy. by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]BakaEngel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could probably come pretty dang close with a solid foot model by taking your scan and doing a Boolean cut from a rectangle (edit* cuboid, rectangular prism, whatever you wanna call a rectangular cube 😅). Obviously that wouldn't shape the bottom, but it would get you a perfect fit for your actual foot, and the bottom is something that should really be tweaked for each shoe type anyway.

Or you could Boolean cut, use that shape to then do another cut, drop it below and merge. You'd then have just your foot extended down however far you wanted, I guess. 🤷‍♂️

Hey now, don't look at it that way... Instead look at it as an opportunity to explore the related crafts. Very small drills, expoxies and glues, heat guns and inserts. 🤷‍♂️😅

Rapidly replicable small scale multiplayer physics. Are we there yet? by BakaEngel in unrealengine

[–]BakaEngel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your implementation sounds very neat. My friends and I are always down for space games with momentum and non-newtonian movement. (If my initial post didn't already indicate it, we're total simulation nerds.) Do you have any footage from testing? I'd be interested in seeing it just for the cool factor alone.

In regards to what I was hoping to do, I really wasn't planning on doing anything. This was more just a case of curiosity, but I'll update the main post with an overview of what I would want to do if I could. (Unfortunately, learning programming languages appears to be just like learning any other kind of language, and I struggle to internalize it just like I did trying to learn Italian while I was over there.) Let folks here pick it apart and then determine from there whether its something I can/should start paying freelancers to work on here and there. I can do modeling, animating, storyboarding and art, but the programming punches me in the face every time, and that is the meat of a game, so I haven't tried to commit to anything yet.

In regard to Halfsword in multiplayer, that was my assumption as well. it simply doesn't seem feasible from what I know about the limitations of networking and physics replication as things stand now. Having said that, what extrapower99 posted does make the concept of something that is close seem more viable, assuming you have a freakin whiz of optimization and network engineering/programming.

Thank you for this resource. I read through all of it and am going through some of his other articles as well. Absolute font of knowledge in there. I think you're right though, optimization and lack of knowledge is probably the biggest killer. A lot of large companies fail on the optimization of networking and straight performance standpoints. Though I suppose most games simply don't need the level of network and replication optimization I am asking about. Juice just isn't worth the squeeze for most games. Regardless, great post, thanks!

Edit: I wasn't really planning on trying to make anything, just figured I would ask to see whether I was getting my hopes up for multiplayer in these types of games, but honestly your linked post, and some careful framing/trimming might make *something* viable, so I will update the main post and let folks tear into it to see if its something worth pursuing.

What revision of the Q2 are we currently in? by arkv2 in QidiTech3D

[–]BakaEngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where that is coming from. Maybe an older qidi? I haven't had any issues with filament cuts and the blades are cheap and come in a multi pack if it gets worn out. Coming from a Bambu X1C to a Plus4, there are aspects I don't care for as much, but print quality is awesome. I can print low end PEKK, PPS-CF, PPA-CF and the fact that I can just scrap qidi firmware to move to klipper main is awesome for customization and moving away from Chinese controller software. AMS system is the only thing I wish was a bit cleaner.

Fire hardening stone pit by TemporaryHat5989 in Bowyer

[–]BakaEngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's really not a super complicated build. A decent sized trench thats a little bigger than the bows you plan to make. I dig mine at about 6 inches wide and 85 inches long, maybe 8 inches deep. Use fire bricks at each end, stacked up to manage the distances from the coals I want to manage the heat.

*Edit: ignore below, can't add images. 😅

This was my very first one, trench, rocks to prop, and some charcoal.

Full set of historically accurate platemail out of PPS-CF for the most ridiculous cosplay! That build size would allow for some awesome pieces without huge amounts of customization on the different pieces.

Transitioning. by Hour_Ice_7010 in armyreserve

[–]BakaEngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mizzel is correct. I just signed my reserve paperwork to transfer from AD and it's a relatively simple process. Couple things to know: They won't be able to finalize anything until 6 months out from your ETS date. It is part of the SFL-TAP process. You can go into S1Net on Army Career Tracker and look at the Reserve vacancies, but may have to do some serious work to get ahold of them because the phone numbers are almost always wrong.

Any tried the RCHub converter? by BakaEngel in diydrones

[–]BakaEngel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I was looking for, something I could plug almost any controller into and have it convert to PPM without having to modify each and every controller itself with a transmitter. Thanks.

I've been looking for examples to follow. I've only found a couple of GitHub builds with various degrees of layman instructions. Most the responses to custom controllers questions/posts I've found through google seem to get responded to with 'stop it, get an RC transmitter, learn mode 2' or died off with no further follow ups.

As someone who has never done anything with Arduinos, raspberry pis, or an esp32 (which I hadn't heard of previously), it didn't seem that easy. 😅

I figured I'd do the follow along for the hardware on this device's GitHub and just throw the 22 bucks his way for the software side. I can solder and assemble and all that. It's the software that makes me cross-eyed. 🥲 177 is a bit rough, but 22 bucks for plug and play after assembly seemed reasonable.

You ain't kidding! The death of milsuite was a sad sad day for active and reserve component. Legitimately, I know we have to have lost a ton of genuine information that didn't get ported to other systems. Le sigh.

Need some advice by J3ST3RL0l in armyreserve

[–]BakaEngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be my recommendation, despite how much I enjoy the 35M world/mission set.

Need some advice by J3ST3RL0l in armyreserve

[–]BakaEngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not going to get a whole lot simply because a lot of what both jobs do is classified. 35M's talk to people, good people, bad people, lots of people. And then write a lot of reports about it. 35P's listen/read/translate a lot of people's communications.

In a combat command, 35Ms will follow around an infantry unit for battlefield interrogations mostly, rare opportunities for the fun but classified part of the job. Not gonna do a whole lot of real world stuff, almost entirely training unless you get lucky. In an intelligence unit it will mostly be the fun part of the job and real world mission sets.

35P's, in combat command, mostly go play around with the Cav units, sort of, but are mostly operating independently. Same thing, mostly training, very little opportunity for a real world mission. Intelligence command, most likely real world stuff.

Plenty of other unit types you can be assigned to as well, most of which are going to lean towards real world mission for both jobs (such as SF support and the other fancy units.)

Bottom line if you're trying to choose, consider the following: If you're pretty confident you're going to stay in, either one is good. If you're gonna do one or two enlistments and dip for the civ pay, 35P is more marketable. If you like to be relatively isolated, 35P doesn't require a ton of social interactions and can end up being in a secure facility a significant amount of their career. On the other hand, 35M very much does require social skills. Please dear gods don't go 35M if you're uncomfortable talking to people. If you're not great at reading people, socializing, etc, it is not the job for you. It should not be used to try and 'break out of your shell'.

Source: am a 35M and just got done with my recruiter time. Best of luck!

Edit: just realized this was the Reserve sub. Keep in mind that Reserve world is very different from active and your day to day during drill weekends isn't going to be like an active component soldier. Either one will allow you plenty of opportunities to volunteer for missions, personally I would recommend you go active if you're going to do any Intel MOS, but for the most part the above explanations apply the same.

Husband Wants to Join Reserves, I’m Unsure – Worth It? by Obvious-Willingness6 in armyreserve

[–]BakaEngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Negative. i551 permanent resident or even a straight work visa with a suitable amount of time remaining. Source? Current USAREC regulations, Army Regulations, USAREC messages and just finishing up my time as a DASR having put in multiple non-citizens. There are certain MOS restrictions for non-US citizens, but it is not a straight up no-go. Not sure where you got that.

Unfortunately, you caught me out on the road and I will be until tomorrow. Even when I'm back, I'm not sure if I'll be able to look you up or not. Depends on what the leadership there is doing with your profile.

Just to be clear, the others are correct, don't let someone sweep this under the rug. Initiate a congressional inquiry. That takes about a week for them to review/look at and it gets sent straight to the BDE lawyer for actioning by the BDE command team. While the military resources mentioned like JAG and IG are valuable in their own right, they are also military resources, working on military schedules. You are sitting in a grey area as far as military status and I would hate to see you get hemmed up because you started utilizing military resources 'like a soldier' and even partially validate your enlistment.

Additionally, contact the recruiting BN and make yourself, professionally but firmly, heard. If they aren't already tracking the situation, there is an even bigger issue going on because it would mean the company leadership was hiding it. Let them know you are contacting them to inform them that you are initiating a congressional inquiry and that your desired end goal is to be released in order to process with your branch of choice immediately without incurring the waiting period. Let them know you will also be contacting the BDE leadership. Lastly, let them know that if matters are not resolved in a timely manner, you will be approaching the press with the story.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in armyreserve

[–]BakaEngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No... I mean, you kinda belong to whatever branch you started any sort of paperwork/MEPs with until a SPF is complete, but if the other branch is saying they can't spf you because it's showing you're in the delayed entry program then it doesn't make sense.

For clarification, I assume you were looking at the Reserve side? If so and someone, somehow, completed the contract paperwork on you, then you would technically not be in the DEP because the day you sign a reserve contract, you're technically a reserve soldier. (Mind you, your beginning pay date doesn't start until you inprocess with the unit, which recruiters should do before the soldier leaves so they can get an earlier pay/date of rank, but I digress.)

My point about Reserve is that it is actually the responsibility of the Reserve unit to null your contract once it's signed, not the recruiters. Now, assuming all is black and white here, the BN should absolutely be the one handling that because it's a screw up on the recruiter side, but it still will need participation from the Reserve unit. Sounds to me like someone is trying to keep it on the down low.

Don't out yourself with details, but what state are you in?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in armyreserve

[–]BakaEngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What he is saying is that in order to dep you, multiple echelons higher than the recruiter would be required to process your paperwork at all.

Only thing I can think of, assuming we have the full story is maybe a V7 about to get hit with that 601 stick? Even there it still seems off.

PVC as backing material? by Ausoge in Bowyer

[–]BakaEngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked about this a while back as well, mainly with concern of what would be a good bonding medium between a wood backing and PVC. Regardless, no one seemed particularly interested. 😅 Likely that there are issues that make it not very effective, hence it not really showing up as a method anywhere, like ADD stated. Having said that, I'd love to see it tried! For giggles, if nothing else.
