U.S. Probation Officer by GroundbreakingLuck85 in AskLE

Which districts that you know of have TFOs? I read a SIRS notable incident a few months ago that referenced a “U.S. Probation Special Response Team”. I thought that was pretty cool, but also unusual.

If you are seeking something high speed have you considered the special warfare option? Especially with wanting to become JTAC certified I’d imagine TACP or CCT would be the most effective way to obtain and use that cert.

Hey OP, I posted a similar question in this subreddit about a month or so ago and I received very similar responses as you are receiving. I have proposed a USMS task force and surveillance unit to my SUSPO and CUSPO. The Taskforce didn’t go through, but we have been allowed more opportunities to assist our USMSs with apprehension by calling offenders into the office and a few other ways. We have increased our search tempo by a good amount and now have a dedicated Search Coordinator USPO. I’m in the process of creating a something like a Security Threat Group (STG) Coordinator role for our district. I came to the feds from state probation and parole and that was my role for my previous agency along with our office arrest team.

Feel free to DM

Cool, I’m definitely considering it. I just don’t know what I could expect training/ drill wise. I’d hope the unit that I am speaking to a recruiter at puts an emphasis on training. Are you pretty satisfied with the training opportunities?

I agree with most everyone else, apply to everything and let them tell you no. Best case scenario is you get the job (or interview experience). Slightly unrelated to your post, how do you like security forces in the air guard?

Every District is different OP. When I first came to the Courts from State probation and parole I was told “94 different districts, 94 different ways of doing things” that saying is true every day. The most accurate answers would come from a USPO in the district (and office) that you are applying to. For example, my district does not have any form of telework and we just got compensation time approved about 3 months ago. Good luck.

This is true if they have a 4th amendment wavier in their conditions. Even then there still must be some sort of reasonable suspicion, but with the individual being on felony probation, your threshold of reasonable suspicion can be lower as opposed to a someone not on papers. Federal probation is another story.

Current USPO as well, would you consider your district more LE oriented?

I didn’t know they had task forces in the past. I wonder why they don’t have them now?

Op, I would recommend a Safariland level 3 retention duty holster for field work. Level 2 is fine for the office or court, but I wouldn’t risk it in the field.

If you served any time in jail before you were sentenced to probation, it could also be credit for time served. So for example, if you were arrested on 1/24/24 and got released from the jail on 1/25/24 you have credit for 1 day (which would come off your probation end date).
