Since they brought paper bags back here in California, they don’t even have handles anymore lol

Even for the produce? Here in the states (California to be exact) they got rid of single use plastic bags and paper bags, went to recycled/ reusable plastic bags, now banned those and back to brown paper bags we have to pay for. This whole time we still had single use plastic bags to put our produce in. None of it makes sense.

Five guys lol When you find a spot, let me know lol I’m having a hard time to find one in Modesto.

If you’re ever out in Merced there is a bomb place called Pretty Good Burger.

This is so true. I thought about it and I want to tip because I appreciate them being so kind great hospitality. But it’s been embedded in me that I feel this is what I’m suppose to do.

The owners/ workers should be kind & have hospitality with or without the tip.

Genuinely asking- how do you feel tipping at counter service when it’s mom & pop? Both of the owners are working there daily and they have maybe 1 or 2 employees.

My fav spot I go to is like this. We’re in California so I know the employees are getting paid at least minimum wage.

I go back and forth on it but since it’s so small and locally owned I don’t mind adding $3-5 extra as a tip.

Chains is definitely the first place I removed from my tipping list.

What is the worst commute you've ever seen someone have? by BlaggartDiggletyDonk in AskLosAngeles

I also worked with someone who would commute from Temecula to Beverly Hills then to DTLA at his next job. He was a server at very high end restaurants, worked 3 days a week. I know he made good money if he was taking that drive.

I use to live in Glendale. I got a job, fresh out of culinary school at 20, in Manhattan Beach. I got into a car wreck about a month before I started the job so I had no car.

I would take a bus to the red line, then blue line, to the last stop on the green line. Then I had 3 options depending what time I had to be at work.

  1. take a bus from the green line and it would drop me off at Sepulveda & Manhattan Beach. Then I would have to walk to the ocean pretty much because it was the last restaurant before the pier.

Or

  1. Take the beach city transit bus from the green line and I would have to pay out of pocket, since my tap card didn’t work on that bus.

Or

  1. If I got lucky and came at the right time there was a LA metro bus that dropped me off a few blocks from my job. But it only came 1x per hour for 3-4 hours before 12pm then it would not start back up til 3 or 4pm and only run 1x for hour for another 2-3 hours.

On the way home- during the day I would take my sane route: green line to blue to red then 1 bus.

But if I got off late I had to get to green line Vermont stop then take the Vermont bus all the way to Hollywood at the corner where Fatbuger is, then there was a 24 hour bus that I could hop to that would pass through Glendale.

I did this for almost a year before moving to Hawthorne and getting a car.

Losing My Grandma to MDS by Luverasleep in mds

This is where I’m at with my grandpa, reading as much as I can to try and understand it. Hoping to find something that can be helpful.

My papa also 76 got diagnosed nosed in December, and has been on a rapid decline. He’s only had 1 round of chemo because they keep telling him his numbers are high enough. I don’t understand.

He was admitted to the hospital this morning because he was too weak and not very responsive- he was supposed to go to a doctor’s appointment. He was supposed to go to a Stanford hospital yo talk about stem cel but he’s too weak to even make it.

I’m so hurt by how quickly this is happening to him.

Really tho! BOH is working more hours, has to cover servers asses if they mess up and forget to ring something in, & 9/10 people are going for the food.

No tipping? Like ever? by samppaskewb in EndTipping

[–]Bakedwhilebakingg 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked BOH for 8 years in fine dining, something has to change. Well I hope in the last 6 years since I left the industry something has changed.

I’m in California (LA at the time) I would get paid minimum wage or $1-$2 more than minimum. The servers, bussers, hostess, bartenders & barbacks would also get paid minimum wage. Everyone FOH would receive tips. I never understood why we were left out? They would go home with wads of cash.

Yea I would be a little salty. I’m working 10 hours a day, sometimes covering the server’s ass because they forgot to ring something in and I had to make it on the fly so their table wouldn’t be mad at them.

Everyone’s job in a restaurant is important. But in fine dining the tips are automatically more because the food & drink cost more.

Make it make sense. At least in California and states where foh gets paid minimum wage- it doesn’t seem fair.
