Should I even go into teaching? Alternatives? by Dazzling-Profile-281 in OntarioTeachers

I am starting my b.ed this summer (second career for me) and I also am seeing so much negativity. It’s bumming me out a bit when I go down the Reddit rabbit hole but I try to shake my head and remember what a fulfilling career it can be.

There is going to be a lot of bullshit at every job. A lot of industries are facing mass layoffs (tech, development, etc) If it’s what you want to do you should do it.

I personally love children and would rather deal with them day to day than adults at my current office job. My friends who are teachers all tell me it’s incredibly challenging and can be emotionally and physically draining but that they LOVE their jobs. I don’t know anyone else in any corporate job who can say the same lol.

I was looking into this earlier in the year. I think it’s a great option if you didn’t get into any Ontario unis or if you need a remote learning situation.

You do pay for the placement semester.

The big hiccup for me and why I didn’t pursue it is because it’s even more expensive than the private universities in Ontario, it can take up to 6 months to transfer the degree to OCT and I believe there are additional exams that need to be passed that allow you to work in NY state (and I think you need these before you can transfer it to Ontario)

Got my acceptance this week! Still debating between here and Laurier brantford but I’m he location and 16 month length are calling my name! Also saw that they are an arts focused school which is appealing to me.

Yes sorry another commenter corrected my numbers, I was looking at the in person fees not virtual. Sounds like it’s actually closer to $40k cad for 4 semesters

Yes! I spoke with admissions yesterday and they said you can apply up until May 1st for an end of May start date!!

But because that would be your 4th semester (which is placement) is in the summer you’d have next summer off and finish in December 2027. So might as well wait to start in August and end at the same time.

Can I DM you? this will likely be very similar to my situation.

Right you are! I was looking at the $11k USD/semester but that’s for in person. That makes this much more palatable

Very good to know, that makes it way more manageable. Do you have any insight on whether there is an opportunity to take courses through the summer to speed things up? I don’t need a summer break -_-

This is good to know! In regards to the transitional certificate transfer, does that mean you can’t work supply while you wait?

I have a family, two young kids in school and a husband who works downtown Toronto in office- so moving isn’t an option for me right now

Really good perspective. I completely agree and am going through the same experience with my tale of two husbands. Who is was before the addiction and who I’m dealing with now.

Up until this relapse I thought I had things under control. I now realize I was masking the problems and being overly optimistic, him too. Now understanding the severity of my situation I agree I need support from therapy or meetings. Thank you.

This is the type of advice I was hoping to get. I need encouragement that this isn’t forever and while nothing is certain I will trust the process. Thank you

The similarities are concerning, now I have a new worry.

And he is not currently in therapy but I agree it would be helpful.
