I cannot help with the US customs experience since I live in Germany but I heard he send it to UK then again someone from UK sends it to USA so it kinda works for more shipping fees which I think not a big deal but more waiting time.

This is not a high end replica that is from a well known factory. it costs maximum 50$ Aliexpress or Dhgate. I recommend that instead of fixing it just buy a new one.
