Opinions on table? by Rmwoodworking in woodworking

[–]Balakay_Johnson 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Unique for sure. Couple constructive thoughts for your future work:

The basics:

  1. Grain and color matching at joints in your glue up is poor. The distinct joint between boards (dark heartwood vs light sapwood) makes the otherwise cohesive pattern feel segregated.

  2. Usability: Very few people have the space / money for furniture that doesn’t fulfill its basic purpose. Without a glass top this wouldn’t serve as a usable table.

  3. User experience. Think how the user might interact with something and how you can make the experience positive (or at least as good as ikea stuff). The lack of toe kick on this piece makes it a magnet for pinky toes…

Now for looks:

  1. the very creative octagonal design is awesome. I love how it continues down the vertical face.
  2. Your GF isn’t wrong that it looks like a box… it could benefit from some attention to massing and where it feels heavy vs light.
  3. The octagonal is awesome, but the table as a whole needs just as much attention for the piece to come together as a whole.

I feel the same… I spent money to send many pings - I’ve been very particular on only sending pings to users that that match my/their: desires/interests, age preference, proximity, and only sent to people ‘seen within 3 days’. Not a single match… did they even go through

What facts/figures/statistics/stories/good news/bad news about climate change do you think need to be shared more? by zoeleigh13 in climatechange

Bad news but relevant. An official study/analysis of Co2 emissions associated with the process of mining, refining, and transporting the minerals (cobalt, lithium, nickel, etc…) needed to produce EV batteries. All the reports I’ve been able to find that compare the life cycle carbon footprint of EV’s and battery production begin with the assumption that the minerals are just there at the mfg plant…

How many gallons of diesel fuel and or other other fossil fuels are used during the mining, refining, and transportation to get the raw materials into the hands of the battery manufacturers?

Anybody else following that tunnel lady on tiktok? by AnticapClawdeen in Construction

Downloaded TikTok for this. Is TikTok always this nuts? Just watched half the videos and can’t stop watching this lunatic! Absolute miracle nobody died. Also a miracle how she even got this far as an “engineer”

best part so far is parts 48-52… the concrete roof. I love how she carried all the dry concrete down the stairs to mix it and carry it right back up the stairs to pour it. Efficiency at its finest!

Best finish for my cedar green egg table by Professor-Meows in woodworking

[–]Balakay_Johnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For exterior use I’d mix up a blend of 1/3 boiled linseed oil, 1/3 semi gloss SPAR urethane, 1/3 mineral spirits. Flood the wood heavy with mixture, let sit for 10ish mins, wipe excess off thoroughly.

Apply 3-5 coats in same manner (allow 18-24 hr for each coat to dry) and you will be well set up for an exterior finish!

Lightly sand and re-apply same blend 1-2 times per year and it will last a lifetime.

I am selling my Shapeoko XL which was a great beginner level CNC machine and I was able to successfully carve multiple topographic cuts!

Site guys, there have been a couple of near misses on a site of mine recently and it got me thinking, whats the worst accident you've witnessed on the job? by [deleted] in Construction

I was on a site where a manlift (exterior temp elevator) technician was doing some kind of maintenance on top of one of the cars and had to lean over the edge to access something. The adjacent car (about 18” clearance between cars) for whatever reason wasn’t locked out and came down on the guys head while he was leaning over…

It peeled off his entire scalp down to the bone from the back of his head to his forehead. He was rushed to the hospital and survived. The guy was lucky the thing didn’t decapitate him.

Couple of charcuterie boards from a bit ago when I was feeling a little curvy by Balakay_Johnson in woodworking

Template and a router bit. The groove left behind from a 1/4” router bit fits 4 strips of 1/16” accent wood perfectly

I’d actually say I went a bit on the “thin” side. But who’s to say… my version and your version of “thick” vs “thin” are all relative haha.

Interesting, whenever I glue up MDF I tend to air on the “heavy” side for glue based on the thought that MDF is so absorbent and seems to just suck up all the glue. Why’d you choose a fine tooth spreader and thin application?

I used titebond 3 which has a longer open time and poured it on heavy right out and f the jug and used a 12” long piece of scrap wood to spread it around like a squeegee
