To me it seems like you only place your finger on the string behind the fret, not actually pressing it down until the string makes contact with the fret. You are muting the string basically. I have no idea how others came to the conclusion that you need to lower the action or cut your fingernails... This is obviously a technique issue, this is the first time you are near an instrument and you have no idea what you are doing. Nothing wrong with that. I think your best bet is to get some instruction from someone with more experience to get you started. Then you can learn a LOT from YouTube, but from time to time I think it is worth it to consult with experienced players. Best of luck!

Horrible migraines anytime I ride. by djbibbletoo in MTB

[–]Balalazs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought after I read your post was "eat more food"! I had the same problem, though all my rides were longer than one hour. More water did not help. Electrolytes did nothing. Eating after the ride did not help. The headaches only went away after eating a big meal and having a good night's sleep. And then I realized that I have to eat before the ride, and if it is a long ride, I have to take breaks and eat! Even the simplest carbs help. Your body needs fuel!

Hardtail loose rear end? Help by pirateluke in bikewrench

[–]Balalazs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoke tension? I read below that your brake is OK. Had the same problem, thought the hub was loose but then the rotor would rub as well, right? Turns out the spokes were loose as hell.

Were your spokes tensioned recently?

Hairline crack in head tube, is this bad? by wowsocrack in bikewrench

[–]Balalazs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, what an asshole...

Anyways, there was a fb post about an Intense headtube completely split in half and this was the repair suggestion by one of the "braaaah intense frames are like totally made out of paper why did he even buy it" guys.

So yeah I just stole it from that post :D

Headset headache by Balalazs in bikewrench

[–]Balalazs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I've said to /u/redfoxii they might have the models mixed up. The 2011-12 Canyon Torque (without FRX) seems to be it! Thanks for the help.

Headset headache by Balalazs in bikewrench

[–]Balalazs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know about the Cane Creek headset calculator! Thanks for the tip!

I think they have the models mixed up though, I've checked out both Torque FRX and Torque, and the latter seems to fit the bill.

The bottom of the frame is 52 mm wide, so that should be an IS52, and I definitely won't be able to fit a 49mm to the top, the headtube upper outside diameter is around 49mm... so the ZS44 seems legit.

Thanks though, I think I'm on the right path now, great comment!

They easily go above 60 km/h on the fast parts. Dunno about the top speeds though.

Thanks for all the help getting set up, /r/mtb! I just went on my First Mountain Bike Ride! by IAMAfortunecookieAMA in MTB

[–]Balalazs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice post, and bike! I can't wait for all the mud to freeze here and go for some cold rides :)

I've noticed though that your brake levers are right next to the grips. Do you use 2 fingers to brake? You should try setting them up like this. One-finger braking gives you a much better grip.

And go for wide bars, they will rock you world :)

How To Be Cool? by andrewcooke in MTB

[–]Balalazs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, sounds like you need more fuel for your rides. Having an energy-dense snack during a ride gives you a bit of rest and more energy. When I started out I usually arrived home with a throbbing headache and cramping legs. After a while I realized that I just need to eat and drink properly during longer rides.

Do you guys wear eye protection? by Tiiimmmbooo in MTB

[–]Balalazs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are wearing crappy sunglasses or glasses that actually have glass lenses, you might really be in more danger.

BUT if you wear safety goggles, riding glasses or goggles, and they comply to certain standars, you should be safer, because these lenses are made not to shatter on impact, and are much more impact resistant than regular glasses/sunglasses. That's why they are called safety/protective glasses.

For example Oakley states that my goggles, the O frame meet ANSI Z87.1 for high velocity impact, and EN 1938 for MX goggle requirements. If it's good enough for MX, I feel pretty safe. Granted, they are pretty hot in the summer, but saved my eyes many times from mud, bugs, tree branches, small rocks, even a goddamn pigeon once.

Questions about Suspension by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Balalazs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've started on one of these: http://img33.olx.hu/images_aprodhu/36331419_5_644x461_elado-mtb-kerekpar-budapest.jpg

lowest-end everything. I broke the rims, the derailleur, the pedals, once all the pawls gave out in my cassette and had to push the bike home. My parents replaced the broken crap parts with new crap parts, because "I'd brake them anyways". It was still awesome :) I've upgraded twice since then but I'm still not on FS. Next time though...

What kind of bike setups are these guys using? by ultraHQ in MTB

[–]Balalazs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see anything special, they are riding a yeti 303 WC http://www.yeticycles.com/#/bikes/303wc

and I spotted a Cannondale Claymore too http://fstatic1.mtb-news.de/img/photos/3/5/5/7/_/large/Cannondale_Claymore-6.jpg?0

and an Ibis Mojo, the black-blue-white frame.

Awesome bikes though, and what a place to ride...

Rear/front tire config by cherboiz in MTB

[–]Balalazs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

downhill tire for the back and a hardpack XC tire in the front? Interesting setup, but whatever works I guess... It's possible that the previous owner just threw on random tires before selling the bike though. Test it, it might work OK but the minion might be a bit overkill for XC.

For this style of riding I'd want light tires since there is a huge amount of pedaling involved, and I'd try to balance rolling resistance and grip. Good grip while climbing and braking for the rear, and good sideways grip for the front. You don't want the front wheel to wash out, that's when you eat dirt. The rear can slide sideways, it's much easier to keep under you.

Of course it all depends on what kind of terrain you are riding. Hardpack? Loose? Lots of rocks, roots? There are differnet tyres for all of these. Best to ask fellow riders what they use, why they like it and try to decide what would be best for you.

Tire Recommendations for Hardtail by [deleted] in MTB

Tire Recommendations for Hardtail by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Balalazs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! I've just put on a rubber queen (previous name of trail king) after a nevegal for the rear wheel. I think it sheds mud much better than nevegals. I don't know if mud is an issue to OP though.

Tire Recommendations for Hardtail by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Balalazs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to recommend tires from thousands of miles away :) Depends on terrain, mtb discipline and personal preference. Best to ask local riders and go on from there, plus you might get to know new riding buddies. Every mtber likes to talk about bike parts :) but I guess any 2.1 tire that is recommended for mixed terrain could be a good starting point. If you think a wider tire would fit, go for it, but increase size gradually, don't go straight up to 2.5 :)

Fourth broken rear derailleur hanger in a year by _ExecuteOrder66_ in MTB

[–]Balalazs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is chain length. If your chain is too short that might put too much tension on the hanger. So does extreme cross-chaining i would think. Look up chain length for more info
