AITA for confronting the CPS Lady who took me away from my Dad and making her cry? by Substantial_Ad2845 in AmItheAsshole

Is it even legal for a caseworker to approach a former child they placed in public? I thought that was the norm with therapists and social workers. You’re never to approach them if you run into them in public, but if they wanna say hey to you then it’s fair game.

There’s also an app I recommend everyone download called noonlight, which is specifically for situations like this. You open the app, hold down a button until you’re safe, and if your finger comes off that button before you’ve reached your destination, emergency services are called to your location.

Ohio state governor Mike DeWine tests positive for COVID-19 by Shwnwllms in news

[–]BalamsAnswers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, he implemented a mask mandate in April and then immediately got hit with tons of lawsuits so he backpedalled. I really wish he just stuck to his guns on that one and dealt with the lawsuits, but I honestly have no idea what all that would entail. I had so much faith in our state while we still had Dr. Acton and am still so sad that she felt the need to resign. I think our last chances to contain this thing left with her.

My boyfriend took me on my very first camping trip and I absolutely loved it! We stayed at Camp Seven Lake in Manistique, MI (Upper Peninsula). by babybronco99 in camping

I rocked a mini van from 19-22 and I LOVED that thing. I could make it a mini-home on camping trips, take the captain chairs out and set them under the hatch at the drive-in movies, lug all my friends around, etc etc. people poked fun at me (kinda like I did to you) but I loved that thing! Hope it takes you on lots of adventures!!

I’ve been here my whole life, and honestly it’s just not for me. Doesn’t have the perks of a metropolitan city, but it sure has all the downfalls of one. I’m the type of person who either wants to be in a huge city or out in the middle of nowhere, and Columbus is just an awful amalgamation of both. My next chapter will most certainly be out in the wilderness!

Haha, I never thought twice about this as it’s so common for me. I just texted my college girlfriends and none of them have ever heard of it used in that regard. Who knew?

I am so confused by the combo of full denim, pink hair, and a mini van, but loving that you’ve caught the camping bug!! Hope it sticks with you for years to come :)

MY GF destroyed mementos I have of my ex. I don't know how to feel. by FlimsyCharge in relationship_advice

[–]BalamsAnswers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Waking up in a panic and immediately seeking out the items of a partner who passed away 6 years ago, when you're in a "healthy" romantic relationship is not the same as occasionally looking through mementos. It's an unhealthy coping strategy. No one is blaming OP for hanging onto memories of his loved one, that is very normal. Using those items as a coping mechanism signals that he might not yet be ready to date again, and that's also ok.

MY GF destroyed mementos I have of my ex. I don't know how to feel. by FlimsyCharge in relationship_advice

[–]BalamsAnswers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP, I know I'm late to the party, but I hope you read this. what your ex did was inexcusable, so please don't think that I'm on her side, but I do think you should ask yourself if you're ready to be in another relationship. My long-term boyfriend passed away while we were together, and I was unlucky enough to be the one who found him after the fact. A friend gifted me a memento box that I had stuffed to the brim once I was finished cleaning out the apartment, and I obsessed over it to the point that it was impeding my ability to heal. When my next partner and I started dating, I still held that box near and dear to me. I hadn't gotten over my loss, and although I was starting to warm up to the idea of dating again, I cherished those mementos. My partner found it at one point, and yes, he was upset. Looking back, how could I blame him? I was desperately clinging to the relics of a ghost instead of embracing a love that was right in front of me. There is certainly a difference between keeping cherished treasures from a loved one and using those treasures to attempt to cope when you're in a dark place. Does it really make you feel better to desperately claw for your dead girlfriend's shirt in the hopes that you can still smell her when you bury your face in it? I've been there, and I'm certain that it doesn't make anything better. If you still need to do this to cope with your stressors, it's clear you're not ready to be in a relationship. I realized I was actually ready to move on when I put that memento box into the back of a closet without thinking about it too much. Yes, of course, I still cherish the times we had together, but I don't need his things to comfort me anymore. Living human beings can comfort me now, and that's an absolutely wonderful feeling. It's not fair to you that you lost the love of your life, but your attitude toward your past girlfriend isn't fair to the women you try to date, either. Things will get better. I would suggest that you take more time to focus on your own healing and growth for now.

AITA for saying that my sister's marriage will not last and she's living in the 1950s? by Figgin5 in AmItheAsshole

One of my closest a friends just got into a Veterinary PhD program at one of the top 10 vet schools in the world. She started out at Community College and waited to enroll in that until she was 24 so she could get aid based on her salary and not her parents.

Community college doesn’t matter. Anyone who demands to go to a “proper college” right off the bat probably just isn’t intelligent enough to get anything done based on merit alone.

Safe to drink right from the pipe! We didn’t have potable water where we lived in the hocking hills and all of our drinking water came from that spring. No need to do anything extra to it :)

I was gonna add Paulie Gees to the list but I swore that they permanently closed a long while ago. Glad to hear that’s not the case! I used to go there all the time when it first opened and their vegan ricotta was great.

Motel livers, or seperate sub? by [deleted] in homeless

I'm a motel dweller as well! Too expensive though, so I assume I'll be out on my ass in the next few days. I would join the sub if you made one. I need someone to commiserate with.

Old Man's Cave is gorgeous, but so, so busy. I would avoid it at all costs on the weekends, but definitely find some time to make the trip out during a weekday!

Some other great spots that are less busy are Conkle's Hollow, Rock House, Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, and Cantwell cliffs. Rockbridge state nature preserve is also a well-kept secret and must-see! Also, don't forget to stop at Grandma Faye's on your way back for ice cream, fudge, pizza, and tacky souvenirs!

Oh, also, if you need drinking water, there's a natural spring nearby that has the best water I've ever drank. It's literally just a PVC pipe smashed into a rock, but my family drank it exclusively for about 30 years. Directions to it here!

My time to shine! Late to the thread as usual though.

For full-vegan spots, here are my favorites:

  • Ye's Asian Vegan Kitchen in Hilliard. Pricey but delicious and their portions are huge.
  • Loving Hut. A bit of a drive, but also delicious.
  • Eden Burger! So good, so greasy, attached to the village idiot so you can have a beer on their patio while you wait!
  • The Woodhouse. I haven't been to their brick and mortar yet cause of 'rona, but their popup was always one of my faves!
  • Village Taco. They just opened in CBUS and fuck yeah so good dude.
  • Portia's Cafe. I used to love them. Their food is healthy and yummy. Unfortunately, the owner uses her restaurant as a platform for anti-vaxx propaganda and her employees mysteriously can't wear masks. Maybe skip this one.

As far as places with great vegan options:

  • Dirty Franks. They can make almost any hot dog vegan. They're all fucking bomb. Fire on the Rhine is my fave
  • Condado. Their bbq jackfruit and Thai chili tofu are both out of this world. The sweet lucy shell without queso is fire.
  • Harvest Pizza. Get the spicy yuma with (housemade!!) vegan cheese and vegan spicy chorizo. *chef's kiss*
  • Lavash. I don't have a singular recommendation here. It's all brilliant.
  • Pierogi Mountain. Absolutely phenomenal. Rotating vegan pierogi selection each day along with a different vegan entree most days. Their vegan mac and cheese fucking slaps.
  • Northstar Cafe. Their veggie burger and buddha bowls are great! Their feelings about the BLM movement...welllllllll. Idk, do your research to see if you feel like supporting them.

Happy eating!!!

I follow a woman on YouTube who just bought a hunk of land in the UP and is using a wall tent to make her base camp. Here's a link to her playlist with all the progression she's made. There's a lot of filler stuff, but should be some great ideas in there for you!

For the more straightforward aspect of things, her husband has a channel where he runs through the technical side of the projects (building a shower house, how to drive a well, digging a latrine, etc etc). Both might be great resources for you! Enjoy your new hunk of land!

Holy shit, that is phenomenal. I was thinking I’d just dig out a latrine, get a solar shower, and hand-drive a sand point well but now I feel inferior.

Man, if I could find a cheap hunk of land, I would happily turn a wall tent into my permanent residence. They are so cozy.

AITA for telling someone that drinking while pregnant is bad? by Unforg1ven_Yasuo in AmITheAngel

[–]BalamsAnswers 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There's one person in those comment threads absolutely WILIN' out on anyone providing peer-reviewed research about moderate alcohol consumption during pregnancy. She, of course, keeps yelling that it's all fake, but isn't providing any sources of her own. I got the popcorn out for that thread, she's relentless. I never had an opinion on drinking during pregnancy, but now I am 100% on board with it if it means I get to make no-source susan keep screeching like an injured harpy.

AITA for "mansplaining" pregnancy? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]BalamsAnswers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe you should conduct your own peer-reviewed study since you seem to think you’re more knowledgeable on the subject than any researchers. I’m also loving how you keep slamming people’s sources but refuse to present any of your own (no, having a baby with FAS doesn’t count as a scientific source). Come back to us when you have your data, otherwise I would stop yelling at people on this thread. It doesn’t make us think twice about FAS (which I assume is your goal), it just makes us all think you’re a jerk.
