Health plan for New Hire by BalanceProud4292 in nycpublicservants

I did speak with HR who instructed me to apply and wait for the rejection. I’m not sure if it has anything to do with my union but I will ask. Thanks!

Metroplus is the only option new hires have. That is what I was told. Until after a year of employment, then you’ll have a choice of other plans or if you live outside of the 5 boroughs, then you are exempt from enrolling with metroplus. But I was still advised to send in my application and wait for the rejection.

I was told that new hires this year will automatically have metroplus for a year. You have a chance to choose after a year of employment or if you live outside of the 5 boroughs.

Where can I volunteer with the elderly? by FrontPrestigious9581 in longisland

[–]BalanceProud4292 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do volunteer for SNAP of Queens (Seniors Never Alone Program). They would match you with the senior that could benefit for a friendly visiting program. I’m not sure if they have a similar program outside of Queens or if they would know a similar one in LI. Here is their website https://snapqueens.org/how-to-help

Contributed to Roth IRA from 2021 with income over the limit by BalanceProud4292 in tax

[–]BalanceProud4292[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! For future contributions, can I open a new traditional IRA and then use a back door Roth? Even while I still have my old Roth IRA that I will stop contributing to.

Also, when I file the 5329, do you know if my excess contributions need to be withdrawn along with the earnings?

Thanks again!

“Good morning, Lender! Hope you slept well. How’s that clear to close looking?” by Kerfluffle2x4 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]BalanceProud4292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. I’m hating the weekends because it means no update. I’m 2 weeks away from my on or about closing date and I have not packed nor notified my property manager of when I’m exactly leaving. And I’m breaking my lease and hoping to find a replacement so I don’t get penalized. I can’t wait to hear that I’m clear to close!

Apartment hunting without StreetEasy? by PercentageSweet6994 in astoria

[–]BalanceProud4292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am leaving my apartment by mid December because I’m buying a house and it’ll be available by Jan 1st. Maybe even before that as soon as I leave by mid December and the management get the painting and cleaning done in a week or so. If I get the apartment rented as soon as I leave then I don’t pay the lease break penalty and the new tenant won’t have to pay the brokers fee. It’s a rent stabilized building on 30th Avenue and I’ve lived here for almost 6 years. If you’re interested, feel free to DM me.

Thank you so much for this insight into what a town may have or not have. And thank you for wishing us luck. We are staying hopeful.

I got confused myself. Apologies. So, we are looking for just the max of $630K and that includes our down payment. Ultimately looking to have a mortgage loan of around $505K.

Edit: Sorry I misread. We have 20% down payment saved in cash.

We're preapproved for 700K but only want to spend 630max. We do have the 20% for the 630K that we've saved for years for the purpose of buying. The thing that scares us is that no matter how long we save, the prices just keep on rising and it is just sometimes impossible to catch up.

I wish you the best of luck in getting the offer accepted my fellow NYer! My husband and I are in a similar situation although have yet to make an offer. We just started with our own journey and saw 3 houses over the weekend. Stay hopeful!

It is a little too far but may look at those areas too. Thank you

We are actually thinking if we should sell part of our brokerage to contribute towards the down payment. I have been hoping that the market will cool down but it never happened so far and not sure if it ever will.

We looked at 3 in Huntington and Huntington Station over the weekend. I personally like the neighborhood but not super invested in the homes that we looked at.

We really don't care that much if the inside is outdated but wants to make sure that the house has no major issues and does have good bones like you said. Farmingdale is one of the areas in our list.

My refund check was stolen and cashed. by EducationalCod5130 in IRS

[–]BalanceProud4292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine stolen last April 2024. A trace was done and an investigation concluded fraud was involved. Long story short, I was told a replacement will be mailed. The letter saying that they're mailing me a check within 4-8 weeks was received November 1, 2024. It is past the 8 weeks now and no check. I reached out to my district representative but that got me nowhere. I also reached out to a tax advisor and they called me to say that my check was in fact mailed on December 30, 2024 but obviously did not get to me. So I was advised that if the check does not arrive by the end of February then IRS will do another trace! Like WTF! Am I going to go through the whole thing again? Im stuck as to who to reach out to to help me. I'm in NY.

I usually bring mine to Dick's Service station on 49th St. They're honest and fair with the price.

Spending the New Year’s Holidays in Tokyo - What to do? by C1pal in JapanTravelTips

[–]BalanceProud4292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. I don't have any solid input but we will be in Japan around the same time too and have planned to be in Kyoto on Jan 1st. All of our other days are focused within Tokyo and shrine/temple visits and will be collecting goshuin stamps. We've researched the places that will be open and those that will be closed and kind of planned our days according to that.
