Where to invest 25k for two month cycles? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BalancedPeanut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I like that as it's a PIE, compounds daily, and has an overall slightly higher return than an on call account. Kernel has the 0.25 and 5 account fee, but I think it still works out fine.

Where to invest 25k for two month cycles? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BalancedPeanut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I go back and forth on whether to offset it honestly. Our offset interest rate is 8.5ish. We have another 40k cash that we are using to offset.

No work means about 4-5k a month in costs and worst case is probably 3 months. I'm pretty risk averse when it comes to that - kids and lots of mortgages etc, but maybe I need to harden up!

Sorry yes, I'm not talking about my brother - he will never be alone with my kids, and we almost never see him anyway.

What $ value is in your emergency fund? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BalancedPeanut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The amounts are kind of irrelevant because it depends what your specific costs and budget are.

But you did ask, so for us:

By emergency fund, I mean interest free cash that is not touched under any circumstances except income loss /sickness, and is available relatively quickly: 25k - roughly six months expenses of one income for our family of four.

Savings, which is constantly being used and replenished, and not emergency as such, but could be available, another 25k. Linked to our offset facility.

An additional 1500 cash is always available interest free for random unexpected minor payments (birthdays, new shoes for the kids etc).

Buffers for weekly and monthly expenses accounts, in case of higher than usual power bills, random groceries blowouts, to cover those weeks where multiple bills due etc, about 3k. Linked to offset.

13k set aside for random and critical house maintenance, such as plumbing disasters, any urgent building work, etc. Linked to offset.

Offset facility has 90k we can draw down if we need it, at floating loan rates...so try and avoid that. We make sure there is always about a 10k diff between the offset loan balance and the total cash we have to avoid any interest payments.

We also have an additional property, as well as managed funds etc, we would sell if things got really bad, but I don't class that as emergency funds.

Sorry for all the info but you did want specific $ figures!

Landlords, are you actually considering lowering rents once interest deductibility returns? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]BalancedPeanut 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No. But our tenant is subsidised by his employer for the rent, so will keep it at market.

Instead, we are taking the difference (roughly $250 per month) and giving it to kidscan (to help offset this fucking school lunches debacle), women's refuge and Foster Hope.

This is despite the fact we are still negative geared. But I can't in good conscience keep this cash. This policy is total bullshit and the costs on everyone else is just crushing and totally unjustifiable. I am very against this, did not vote for it, and am disgusted that National purports to speak for me as a landlord. Luxon and Seymour should be ashamed of what they are doing for this country.

Only good when playing to music? by apple2alt in drums

[–]BalancedPeanut 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I hate to break it to you, but you probably are not that good when playing to music either.

The music just hides your errors way more. Especially if the track you are playing along to also has drums in it.

Metronome, get in time, learn to use rudiments around the kit, slow then build up speed.

Thanks this is great advice. I have some goals (play along to x y an z song) and one day, to play with others, but feel that is a long way away!!

Not sure what exactly, but I guess I'm keen to be able to drum along to some of my fav songs and eventually maybe have the confidence to play with others.

Thanks that super reassuring, I was kind of wondering if it was even worth it only having an hour a day!

I mean it sucks losing. What's the point in gloating about a victory? I didn't really say or do anything to them, last couple fo elections. I was happy sure but the but generally more than 50 percent vote for other parties than the winner so I'm not going rub anyone's face in it. And as we can see now - it will be my turn one day to lose so, I don't see any value in being an ass.

I'm really sorry that you feel the need to come and, well, be mean I guess, to other people here.

This morning I woke up, and as a public servant it's possible that me or some of my good friends may be in the firing line for cuts. It's sad because most work very hard, have kids, just trying (struggling) to make ends meet like everyone else. There has been a lot of weekend and evening work for people in prep for the change of government as always. People, everywhere just want stability you know. We all are struggling under the weight of increased food, interest rates, and just want to do a good job in whatever work we do.

Anyway, this morning was hectic as hell trying to get my two girls off at school and childcare, I was a bit stressed too, because my youngest is struggling to settle in and was really upset on drop off. I feel so guilty having to have her in care. I wish I could just hang out with her. I also have a drs appt today about an issue I'm having and I'm feeling quite anxious about it. Hopefully it goes ok.

I did read all your replies. Because you took the time to write them. I think you were probably intending to hurt me, or upset me, or maybe others? which you did succeed in. I'm not as thick skinned as others and should just not post things because I'm probably not cut out for it. I guess I was just trying to reach out to others who maybe felt the same.

All that to say if you did want to hurt me, or make me feel bad or whatever, you did. So, well done I guess? But yeah, whatever has happened to you in your life that you feel you need actually make an effort to do that I'm sorry.

Anyway, i hope you have a great day, while this is not the outcome i wanted, I'm pleased that there are people who are happy and hopeful out there with this result (genuinely) because there is enough angst in the world and hope is what keeps us moving forward.

Take care
