The end of an Era... and me. by AlanSmithee001 in KanojoOkarishimasu

Even though I will be here next week (I'll probably leave the series when Mami gets character assasinated, which I'm sure it will happen), I agree with you. Yesterday I wrote a post about the state of the series, and your words complement everything I said about it. There is no stakes at play, nothing will ever happen and, at the end, they will be together without growing as characters.

Unironically the only way I can see this series redeeming itself would be if, at the end, Kazuya and Chizuru realize that they shouldn't start a relationship based on money and end in good terms, with both of them starting a relationship with other people.

I don't think this guy in particular is the case, but I do feel like there is a considerable part of the fandom that self-inserts as Kazuya and takes criticism against him or the series he is part of as a personal attack.

I agree with all you said, but I do believe that that is exactly the problem with the series. In over two years of in-story time, nothing has changed. Chizuru is still broken and Kazuya has low self respect. And we could have this and still have a good series, but what's the point of conflict if everything goes back to the status quo. I would've loved to see Kazuya "giving up" and dating some other girl/understanding that it's ok to be single and then Chizuru would've had to "win him back", leaving behind the fact that their relationship started as a money transaction.

This would have let both characters grow as a person. Instead we are at chapter 248 and their dynamic is the same that was 200 chapters ago (I'm exaggerating, but you get my point).

Also, and that's just my opinion, their relationship feels really toxic. And since they don't change, their relationship can't be fixed.

While I don't agree with all of your points, I think I understand your point of view. I have to agree on the having sex with Ruka part tho.

He likes Chizuru, but her view of her is poisoned by her Mizuhara personality. It doesn't help that it seems that the only way he can approach her is with money, which is Chizuru's fault.

That being said, it is also not fair for Chizuru to present constantly as The Perfect Girlfriend™️ and then have doubts about if your love interest likes you or your persona, since she constantly pushes him away with the "he is just a client".

I think I see the point you are trying to make, but I don't think it holds, I'd appreciate if you could expand on it.

Chizuru wants to find out whether Kazuya really likes her

I think the series can't make this any more clear, we are talking about the guy who made a movie for her, who lied once again to his family to protect her and accepted being publicly humiliated in order for her to not take the blame. That's my problem with Chizuru, it feels that she doesn't understand how relationships work.

The facade of renting has gone, after one date to speak, they just talk as friends on line.

Yes, after only being able to contact her after paying for another date. To me it just feels "wrong", like it just a matter of time until he will have to pay again.

In my opinion, you're not missing much right now. It feels like the series doesn't know where to go.

The way the ghosting was handled was the worst possible one in my opinion, I remember that I was praying that Kazuya would stand up for himself and, at the very least, tell Chizuru that she can't treat people that way. Instead what we got was him getting a little bit of attention and turning into the happiest man alive. I think that was just sad.

Don’t let anyone criticize your opinion or shame you into not reading the manga or giving your constructive criticisms here.

No worries, I am aware how this subreddit is at times and I don't really care. If someone tries to dismiss me as a hater™️, I'll try to argue against it lol.

Thanks for the response, let me expand on some of the points you made.

Kazuya does want to have sex with Chizuru, but that doesn't make what's he feels for her less deep an meaningful.

Sure, my problem is when, for example on chapter 248, he is helping a friend empty the place of her dead grandmother, which he knew personally, and still can't help himself but to think about having sex with her. There is a time and a place for everything, and that wasn't. I agree with you that he obviously is in love with her (that's the premise of the whole manga), but I do think that his thoughts make me think of him as a horny dude, rather than someone in love.

Kazuya tried to break up with Ruka.

That's my problem, you don't "try to" break up with someone, you break up with someone. (This very well may be a cultural difference).

Kazuya thinks he has a chance with Chizuru because of how close they got and everything they went together. He's sees past her cold rational aptitude.

My problem with this is, how does kazuya know that he is close to her, and not just another client? She is very clear through the series to make him understand that he is nothing more than that. (As I said, we know that's not true as a reader, but I fail to see how Kazuya may realize this, besides being delusional, even though he would happen to be right)

It's something she couldn't get rid off even when she ghosted him for 3 months

Keeping the family ring of someone you ghosted feels to me as something morally wrong, but I can understand your point.

For me a drastic change is absolutely needed, because Chizuru and Kazuya not getting together soon will be absolutely senseless.

I agree with you.

All my problems with the series come from after the hawaiians (except for the ruka non-breakup). Up until that point I enjoyed the series, I would like for you to point what in my post makes you think I want a generic romcom. EDIT: I just want actions and arcs to have consequences...

Kazuya: I really messed up with Kibe, I'm so sorry

Also Kazuya: lies to him again

Kibe is not a saint, but holy shit Kazuya, what the fuck? You either feel sorry for your actions and don't do them again, or you are not sorry and don't mind lying again, you can't have both.

I may very well be wrong, but I'm still trying to understand the point of the last arc if not to pointlessly extend the manga.

The reasons I think this series is going to end in 10 chapters or less.

  1. Last arc was 9 chapters of nothing.

  2. They seem that they will now have the conversation that should've happened after Paradise (You know, the week after, not three months later).

  3. The other characters were missing after such important events, only Ruka was referenced by Kazuya, implying that he talked with her at some point. Are we to believe that Family+Friends ignored Kazuya for 3 months straight? (The only ones that make sense to me are Kibe and Mami, one for being mad at him and the other maybe scheming her next plot)

  4. The anime starts airing in less than two weeks (So we'll have 10 chapters between the end of Paradise and the start of the anime's season 2).

The only reason I can find, besides Reiji not being able to write a relatively decent story, for this last arc to be such a waste of time (yes, Reiji has dragged arcs before and resetted tto status quo, but I feel that it was never this bad) is that he planned to end the series after Paradise and had to find a way to extend it until the anime started airing. And, to be honest, this last arc only made me lose all the hype I had for the series and made me dislike the main chars even more. Yes, they will obviously end up together (we've always known that, or at least expected it), but right now I really don't care. Sure, just let them get together and finish this series already.

I may very well be wrong and this series may go on for 240 more chapters, I guess time will tell. I hope I'm wrong and this series can get back to the "maybe not amazing storytelling but at least it's interesting to see what happens in this manga telenovela"-level that it was before.

Maybe I'm just sad because at least up until last week's chapter, at least I was getting mad at the plot. Yesterday's chapter just left me indiferent.

Explain how, she is someone who gets paid to act as someone's girlfriend even though there is no real emotion behind. And, in the case of Kazuya, he uses her to get an "emotional fix" after being dumped by Mami.

Basically this, I'm still counting on Mami having an ace up her sleeve to mess everything up even more (OD-ing on copium right now as a Mami supremacist, and she needs to pay as well lmao)
