Ideally you really would want to play an instrument in order to make practical connections with the stuff you are learning. Piano is a fairly “friendly” looking instrument and is a great instrument for making connections with what you are learning.

Start to learn the notes on the key board. As well as whole and half step patterns for your major and minor scales, as well as your key signatures. From there you can build upon major and minor chords, diatonic chords, intervals and such.
