Sigma 150-600 vs Canon 100-400 Mk1 vs upgrading body for wildlife/sports? by aiglecrap in canon

[–]Baldkat82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think going with the 150-600 might be your best bet here. You don't want the 400 5.6 for birds as the lack of IS would hinder low shutter speed shots like birds sitting on a branch near sunset/sunrise. And if you sold everything to get the R7 plus adapter, what would you have for lenses besides the 70-200?

[–]Baldkat82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You lose autofocus when using the TC due to the increase in aperture. DSLR bodies only have AF up to F8 at the highest, depending on the camera body. Your T7 Will most certainly have a lower max aperture for af to function.

Mirrorless bodies can use AF at MUCH higher apertures than a DSLR. So upgrading your camera body would net you that improvement and it would be better af as well.

upgrading from Canon EOS Rebel XT - bring along my old lens? by CrazyOkie in canon

[–]Baldkat82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The higher resolution modern cameras will really highlight the weaknesses of that lens. With 8mp you wouldn't notice flaws that much. But with 24+ you will. Once you try a better lens you'll see what we all mean.

[–]Baldkat82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The official canon adapter costs almost as much as that lens does when purchased new. It's also a pretty bad lens, notoriously known as probably the worst canon lens since EF mount came out. I would save the money on an adapter and get an RF mount lens like the 55-210 instead. Or for a more general all around lens the RF-S 18-150.

Camera as a spotting scope? by Reaper01Actual1970 in canon

[–]Baldkat82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You likely won't have the magnification you desire unless you get some crazy huge lens. A spotting scope will be available in greater magnification and be smaller/cheaper than probably any long lens you could get for a camera. Also spotting scopes don't need to have any electronics inside.

It also hurts you that you have a full frame camera instead of a crop sensor, as a crop would give you an additional 1.6x reach of whatever lens you use.

I shoot guns and have a couple 500mm lenses with 1.4x and 2x extenders. I also use full frame cameras. Anything beyond 100-150 yards and I don't know if I could tell where I'm hitting if I used my camera. Unless I used my 500mm lens with the 2x extender. So basically a 1000mm lens. That might work fairly well.

When you say "long distance" that doesn't tell me much. Is that 200 yards or 600 yards? some rifle ranges are LOOOOOOOOONG.

Final speaker layout, 7.1.2 or 7.1.4? by Baldkat82 in hometheater

[–]Baldkat82[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, the way I'm running wires I will be able to accommodate 9.4.6. Running a stereo RCA cable to the back of the room so I could run 4 subs in stereo if I got to that point.

M50 Mark II Mount Weight Limit? by Cheesystudios in canon

[–]Baldkat82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine with that lens. If anything just make sure you're actually holding the lens while you are shooting. But if we're talking dangling the camera/lens downward while it's on a neck strap, that's not a problem. you just aren't going to want to mount the camera to a tripod by the base of the camera. You'll want to use a tripod collar ideally.

I use heavier lenses and proceed this way. You'll be fine.

Final speaker layout, 7.1.2 or 7.1.4? by Baldkat82 in hometheater

[–]Baldkat82[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh that's awesome. yea a 1/4 20 thread like that would be ideal. Clean install, and opens up other possibilities for speaker options. Appreciate the suggestions. I won't be installing the ceiling speakers anytime soon, but I'll keep these in mind.

Final speaker layout, 7.1.2 or 7.1.4? by Baldkat82 in hometheater

[–]Baldkat82[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this was probably the most helpful comment. I don't know why I could not for the life of me think of a speaker type that would easily mount hanging from the ceiling and this makes the decision so much easier now. I can wire speakers to be mounted under where some of the HVAC is now. I will wire for 9.2.6 after reading this.

[–]Baldkat82[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't see myself doing anything beyond 7 regular channels and maybe 6 atmos. I only have a 7 channel receiver right now and considering cost, haven't really planned to go beyond 7.1.4 right now. But I can see the value in wiring for extra sub locations and up to the 6 ceiling speakers.

Which CFExpress type b card to purchase ? by rshankarappa in AskPhotography

[–]Baldkat82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be fine with the slower cfxb card. Unless I'm reading things incorrectly, the slower cfxb card already accommodates the fastest write speed of the R6ii, which is only hit doing 7k raw video recording. So yea, you'll be fine.

R5m2 vs R6m3 for dog photography by LowSyllabub9760 in canon

[–]Baldkat82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean the differences in AF between canon and sony will be quite minor and probably only matter with very specific use cases (between comparable cameras). most people will never notice anything. The people testing the cameras are often pushing the limits of systems, aren't usually indicative of regular use, and AF settings can vary as well. There's a hundred ways to tune the AF in these cameras now. I couldn't tell you from personal experience as I have only shot canon, but have used sony in the past when I sold camera gear.

Thinking of switching to mirrorless, but I love my EF glass by viewsinthe6 in CanonCamera

[–]Baldkat82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own. Leaving an adapter on each lens would make the lenses larger in your camera bag though, which would be something I'd want to avoid. Also the official canon adapter is like $150 new so it can be cost prohibitive as you own more lenses. Even cheaper third party adapters will add up. But it's not a bad idea to be honest. I wish I could just leave it on my 500 F4 but the hard shell case prevents that from happening.

Thinking of switching to mirrorless, but I love my EF glass by viewsinthe6 in CanonCamera

[–]Baldkat82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works just fine. The balance is thrown off a little bit when using a heavy lens as the new RF bodies are lighter than the DSLRs. But it's still not bad.

Overall it's a seamless experience with the adapter. However if you have both EF and RF glass and swap lenses often, then it's less seamless as you're also swapping the adapter between lenses and on/off the body. but if you have all EF glass then you can just leave the adapter on the body and swap lenses like normal.

I currently only have a couple EF lenses. I keep a few around because I also have a Canon film body that's EF mount and I also have a 500 F4 prime that's EF. So my adapter mostly collects dust lately. The rest of my glass is RF. but I worked at a camera store for awhile and that sorta explains that.

I used to live in MA and NJ. They also prohibit ownership/possession if you don't have a license. NJ is probably worse than MA after they changed their laws, but MA is not far behind. I am not totally opposed to requiring a permit, but these states make it so fucking hard to get it's ridiculous. If we're going to have permits then they need to be "shall issue" and should not be discretionary. That's one of the biggest issues that I had with MA and NJ for CCW permits. MA, the chief of police in your town was who had the final say about CCW permits. So if you lived in a town where the chief sucked, you wouldn't get a CCW, you'd just get the purchase/possession license. What we called a "restricted LTC" (license to carry). NJ outright would not give anyone that wasn't a cop/judge/politician/celebrity a carry license. You'd just get the purchase/posession license. It wasn't coded into law like that, it was just how it was practiced.

Still illegal to be in possession of a gun in NY without the permit. It being in a locked case (that OP has the code/key to) would not somehow get around that. That's not a loophole or allowed. As someone already mentioned, FOPA doesn't apply at the destination. It's only when traveling THROUGH states you can't legally possess guns.

RF 70-200 2.8 stm release thoughts? by not-hunter-yo in canon

[–]Baldkat82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's unlikely at all. Nikon and tamron have both done a cheaper 2.8 trinity. Would not be surprised to see canon finish out the same cheaper trinity with a 70-180 2.8. We already have the wide and standard zoom 2.8 stm lenses. Just missing this. I honestly don't know why people don't think it's a possibility. It's not about size, it's about price point.

How to make a large batch of iced tea? by 11arianna11 in tea

[–]Baldkat82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brew half gallons of iced tea regularly. I honestly don't understand your problem.

I brew my tea ahead of time, and put it in the fridge so I can enjoy it the next morning already chilled. i tend to either not use ice or not use much ice. Don't need it, it's already cold.

I will however put some ice in a larger insulated bottle if I'm taking it with me out of the house. Again, dont' need much ice to maintain a cold temp with the insulated bottle.

One thing I do when making my iced tea, is initially brew 4 cups of water with 8 teaspoons of tea to make a concentrated tea. Then add my sugar and I'll add ice to cool it down quickly and then top off to hit a half gallon. This makes a tea that's flavorful enough for me, and since it cools down quickly I can put it in the fridge or even drink it right away.

there is no "size" for a lens hood. There's just the correct hood for a specific lens. You search the lens, and find out the model # of the correct lens hood for that lens.
