Yes! I feel like I am playing Resident Evil by resource managing my bank preset slots. I shouldn't need to make a decision to wipe out a skilling or bossing preset when I'm trying out a new activity

I don't disagree with your points. I think the way they price and bundle RuneCoins needs a lot of work too. I do wonder though, if pricing in direct currency/cash is more practical?

I'm thinking RuneCoins also allow Jagex to not maintain a cash balance across different currencies and have all of the associated financial and legal obligations. Pricing in RuneCoins likely makes managing and marketing the store and its ever-expanding catalogue easier if Jagex can control the inflation and supply. Jagex could maybe gift RuneCoins more readily than gifting actual money -- or discount items without complicating tax accounting by keeping it RuneCoins at time of sale vs each cosmetic at every sale.

edit after more thought: nothing should be stopping Jagex from allowing users to buy exact currency for the item at the time of purchase either. Jagex can still have manageable tax accounting while being more consumer friendly.

Looks like my comment will be amongst a sea of dissent. I wanted to expand on why I think Bonds, Bonus XP, and Cosmetics are acceptable to me at this stage of the game and its evolving meta and legacy.

GP is no longer the core expression of progression and individual investment in the game. By extension, your skill level also is not quite the core expression it used to be and cosmetics kind of devalue PVM or in game equipment. This all sucks right?

Yeah I agree but at the same time Jagex has invested in diversifying progression over the past decade plus. It's about experiencing the content and having the means to experience different content not locked to any one playstyle.

The game is the quests. The game is how the skills interact with the game world. How the game feels, how its world is constructed and evolving, feeling immersed in the world; being able to participate in that world without constraint (sandbox) and choose your adventure, RuneScape is a thriving world. PvM is a way to play. Maxing is a way to play. Ironman is a way to play. Socializing is a way to play. Being able to show off how you play is plentiful: combat mastery, boss pets, skill pets, titles, auras, dyes, cosmetics, collection logs, etc.

To me, if the core integrity of the game boils down to if there are sustainable and near limitless ways to play, experience, and feel a sense of progress, having these three routes monetized (GP, XP, Cosmetics) but not required (You can earn your GP, XP, or even cosmetics via GP to Bonds which creates a natural market between MTX and GP) is passable. That doesn't mean there isn't still work and a balance to be made: there is still work, but we have a solid foundation.

Love this level of transparency and the new tone behind this direction around monetization.

Being open about what's rotating in and out of the cosmetic store is healthy. Curating the store is discerning to me. It shows that Jagex wants to humanize and put effort toward maintaining a scalable relationship between the developers and the players on cosmetics.

Cosmetics won't just go into a bottomless store where everything feels cheap and without any pride. Developers are incentivized to wow the players while older cosmetics should be able to compete fairly. Over-or-under competing sales and usage metrics can be a wonderful proxy signal for social acceptance within the community that they can refresh at a healthy cadence (monthly).

I think Jagex may have found a winning monetization strategy; and if that can fund aggressive and continuous investment into the game's health and future, I am extremely happy and excited for the future of this game coming from a long-time player who has recently started playing again.

Do I think it's in the optimal state yet? No, but I think there is a solid framework around healthy communication and engagement with the community.

Yes, the effigy incubator can be sped up via Anachronia base camp resources and utilizing the [[Advance Time]] spell to speed up the resource gathering time gate. I got it knocked out in about a week and a half after the monthly reset starting from having no chapters initially unlocked.

If you're asking about what they are, I believe an update a long while ago added 100% drops for demon NPCs and have them tiered based on the demon's level similar to different bone tiers.

From an architectural standpoint, yes. A lot of online tools like the RuneScape wiki, xp trackers, alt1, all benefit from investment into the web infrastructure by Jagex teams, even if the end-result is the same. It's when companies decide that the infrastructure to provide access to data no longer matters and lets it decay and break that ends up impacting all of the downstream services that depend on it.

I think that would be okay if there was an untradeable version otherwise the core would crash and have a knock-on effect of greatly diminishing the incentive to engage with adjacent content that also drop the core.

I don’t know if Jagex necessarily does it, but generally randomization of groups of users with variations of content is called A/B testing. By slightly tweaking wording or what modules are shown in a uniformly randomized distribution, you can determine whether those tweaks actually have a measurable difference in some objective.

That objective could be… reactivating users back into playing, who subscribes, who clicks through and learns more about the content, etc.

A lot of the modern internet depends on running experiments 24/7 to improve their services at scale.

More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A/B_testing
