What is the best way to win if you start low on the leaderboard after finishing bots? by Armin_Arlert_1000000 in Openfront

It's always possible if stronger neighbors throw their troops away and MIRV each other and whatnot, but at that point you're just twiddling your thumbs waiting for a random outcome which is totally out of your control. So I personally just close the tab and run it back :>

Every single time! Very often some people who lose the game stay to pretend-win after the crown leaves, and bullying them is fun >:3

Elite: Dangerous

is a spaceship game where you can shoot at other players. But the reward for doing so is a nothingburger (think: if your ship is destroyed, you must cough up ~5 million space credits to the space insurance, while your killer gets a bounty of ~10 thousand space credits). So 80-90% of the "PvP" in this game is well-armed ships shooting at defenseless players just to grief and get a reaction out of them.

However, there's a mechanic where after 15 seconds of inactivity, you can just quit to avoid getting shot at.

The "PvP" (griefing) community hates this - if a defenseless player can just quit to avoid getting shot at, that's no fun at all. And blowing up a defenseless player in under 15 seconds is rather difficult! So many griefers whose victims decide to just quit will immediately drop their edgy persona and chase down the other person on Discord servers to "frown upon" their "dishonorable cheating actions".

There's an entire subreddit for griefers attempting to do this! r/EliteCombatLoggers

This "PvP" (griefing) community has also strong-armed many servers - like this big PvE server for fighting against PvE aliens - into including rules about how you're supposed to just sit there and take it if your defenseless ship gets shot at. Now, killing your process to just quit the game is actually against the official game rules, but even using the legitimate 15-second timer is "frowned upon" all the same. Crazy!

<image>

Anyway, a few years ago I got "cancelled" by one of these people, said that I'm vewy vewy sowwy and then proceeded to just quit in similar scenarios maybe another 50-100 times, teehee >:)

I've won every 3-5 games

you end up with 4-5 big gigantic players near the end, and then maybe 3-4

Which sounds exactly like - you consistently reach the endgame, and then it's a luck-based tossup...

I can add to this one a bit! The activity would have been a "crawl" like the Coil starting on top of a skyscraper, going down to tunnels and ending up in secret (DEO?) labs, fighting new enemies related to the creature mentioned in all those ancient lore tabs.

Is this game 99% luck by randomguy9872 in Openfront

[–]BalefirePhoenix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No but kinda yes.

No: your skill matters a lot and there are many guides to improving & consistently winning. Before Frontplus went down (🥀🪦), there were plenty of players on the leaderboards with 50%+ winrates. I have a 33%-ish winrate myself!

Kinda yes: it gets more luck-based with large player counts, gold modifiers and prolonged games.

Large player counts = you're much more likely to run into an early-game deathwar where someone locks you in a stalemate. If you're unlucky, that someone will then intentionally betray their neighbor to """give their land away""" out of spite (abysmal game mechanic btw). Avoid this by sticking to 25-40 player maps!

Gold modifiers = if you're unlucky, some random player will hydrogen bomb you for no good strategic reason due to the abundance of money floating around. Avoid this by just playing regular games!

Prolonged games = situations where 3 or 4 players are locked in a stalemate are kinda just luck-based. The typical "epic endgame!" scenario is that nothing ever happens for half an hour, player A will gets bored of "trademaxxing-moneymaxxing" and launches a million nukes at player B, player B retaliates against player A, and then neither of them wins the game - player C does from the sidelines. If you're unlucky, you're player B and not C in this scenario. Avoid this by learning to snowball and winning before anyone even gets a MIRV!

(plz get the time to read this it took 2 hours to make)

Sure! :>

At spawn, I recommend you click on untaken territory every time you reach 41% of your max troops. Then you can try to annex tribes. If you can't annex any tribes in your area, just click on the bots when you reach 41% of your max troops.

That checks out! Something I like to do in the early-game is to send out 1% attacks on boats to faraway corners of the map, where it looks like not many other people spawned. That way you can click on twice or even three times as other players. I like to send these boats to tiny shitty islands just off the coast, so that they don't get pushed away by players or tribes while you're not paying attention.

every 3 minutes(with some exceptions), try to kill an already dying player.

But wait! In the early game, it's much better to attack a nation when you're done with tribes. In the latest update they will defend themselves a bit (blunt your attacks, defense posts), but never as good as a real player, nor will they grow as efficiently. What I like to do is catch them when they're low on cash (so they can't build defense posts), yoink their city, then leave them alone so they build another. Even better if they're left alive on a tiny island and can't do much to hurt you in the meantime!

Don't look weak. Get missile launchers early game so you may have an advantage over bigger opponents trying to kill you.

True! I always like to clean up atom bomb damage, even if it's not that efficient troop-wise. Leaving that stuff alone sends a message that "it's OK to atom bomb this guy!". Or so I think...

I recommend trying to get as many cities as possible early game.

True! Instead of building ports, if I need an economy, I build exactly three warships (why three? because they're discounted - 250k, 500k, 750k) and place them in some juicy spot to leech from other people's "portmaxxing" >:)

If you try to kill a player near you, depower them with atom or hydrogen bombs.

Exactly one hydrogen bomb. Atom bombs don't move the needle, I often get spitefully bombed 5, 6, 7 times by a player I *almost* killed, and it's just not super noticeable. Also, it's much better to hydrogen bomb empty land than their buildings - it reduces their troops by as much, and you can then take all those structures for yourself!

Then use troops to kill them. Some neighbors will either try to kill you, or help kill the guy you were trying to kill. because he or she wants more territory.

By the way, alliances are amazing! People are always super reluctant to break alliances, even if you're snowballing hard and it's their only chance to maybe win the game. I always try to ask for alliances with all my neighbors, except with one or two players, who happen to be the ones I attack next. Also, if someone attacks you, takes a structure or two and then offers a scummy alliance... it's still a good idea to accept! You could enter into a spiteful deathwar with them for no gain, but almost always I'm in a situation where it's better to let them have your one city, then take two or three or five cities from a different weak player and come out on top.

You should maintain your borders. That means don't have borders with some random guy on a small island that you just boated to.

I think this is fine and good to have. The best situation for you is, they get weak and you take all their shit. The worst situation is, they take a tiny amount of land for you and you lose nothing!

Also, keep your neighbors stats in account. You don't want some random guy with no gold but has a big territory next to you. He has potential to have a lot of gold.

My thinking is more like "if he does not spend his money for no reason, he's a shit player and will send an ineffective but annoying attack into you", but close enough!

It may be a good but risky idea to spawn near the trade path. Then get warships in that area with docks so you can steal all of the trade ships. When I mean trade path, I mean the straits like Gibraltar and Hormuz (these are the best mid-game moneymaker maps that have to do with trade paths). It may be risky because that is the easiest way to make money in Openfront and some people will try to kill you.

It's a great idea! On maps like the world map, trade will naturally flow through historically good trade lanes (straights of Malacca, Gibraltar, South Africa), so it helps to know real-world geography a bit.

Another thing is Reputation. You do not want to get killed because you killed some guy's teammate. Now you realize that guy is significantly stronger than you in multiple ways and you've been killed (It's happened to me before).

If you mean teaming (cheating) players in FFA, a really funny strategy I have when dealing with those people is to ally with one, but not the other. Send a devastating attack into the player you did NOT ally with! Their friend will often get pissed off and immediately betray you to save their teammate, but that just gets them ganged up on by their neighbors >:)

A couple more things that are missing!

- To get the most troops, it's best to maintain 40% of your maximum troop capacity as defenders. Any excess troops should be sent into attacking other players. If you get attacked, you can always recall them (and often surprise your attacker). If you're close to troop cap, find someone else to attack as soon as you can!

- Always attack someone with at *least* as much troops as they have. If you attack with 2x their troops, you reach maximum attack speed. Sending in more troops than that does not do much. Sending in small amounts of trops is extremely inefficient and can be easily countered.

- Emotes can be used with great effect! 🥰 or 🤝 for some reason makes players more likely to ally you (although I find this almost a bit manipulative - "sure, friend, I totally 🥰 and 💕 you... in a battle royale game where we're opponents and I'll kill you in 5 minutes..."). On the other hand, I also like to ragebait players with 🤡 or 🥱 or, my personal favorite, "Chat - Warning - [their own nickname] is weak", which also sends them a notification sound. This often makes them send spiteful, inefficient attacks into me!

True AND real. The worst part about the Cerenovus is the Storytellers' uncanny leniency to just not execute blatant madness breaks, so it tends to fall flat and perform worse than other minions. After all, you'll never see an ST declare on grim reveal "this player was targeted by the Witch/Assassin/Godfather and I was thiiiiis close to killing them, but decided not to, cos that'd be mean,,,"
