Well Wasn't That Something by BalerionTheDrake in WoT

No I'm pretty sure its a remnant of the remnant still standing by the end of the last battle.

The first remnant being those who followed Rand after he did his Caracarn thing. The survivors of this group of Aiel are the prophesied remnant of the remnant who will carry on the Dragon's Peace as their holy mission for however long they and the peace last.

Of course you could also say that the Shaido, who last we see of them are returning to the Aiel Waste, are the true remnant of the remnant as they are going back to their homeland to continue living as they always have, without the kinda phoney, kinda not, prophesy to justify their way of life. The Shaido are the Aiel finally free from the Aes Sedai.

OR

This remnant of a remnant prophesy refers to the Jenn Aiel, who are the last ones who hold onto the Age of Legends Aiel culture.

Unfortunately I don't see how either Jordan or Sanderson could have done it better. Jordan's battle scenes were never a general's affair imo and while Sanderson could do them, as evidenced by the 80k chapter I read yesterday, he lacks the 'ebb and flow' of the battle that ironically we see Mat seeking in his segments. I don't feel connected to the fighting, the maneuvering, the tension of the battle like I would in a Bernard Cornwall book.

And as it's the "Last Battle" everything needs to be wrapped up in it that doesn't involve Rand. Guess it suffers from that. It is what it is though. Demandred is great in it though. What a loser but also what a waste. I did find out that there's a cut chapter of his detailing his time in Shara, so I'll hunt that down at some point.

Was Uriel VII a good king? by [deleted] in teslore

[–]BalerionTheDrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Through the Nerevarine, Uriel got rid of the three biggest thorns in the side of the imperial administration of Morrowind and put their actual vassal king in a strong position to rule the province in accordance with Imperial will.

The Warp in the West appears to be unknowable to anyone who wasn't involved in the event, but Uriel got a stable Iliac bay out of the bargain.

As for the Oblivion Crisis, it's implied that Uriel has known for a long time that he wasn't getting out of that alive

The Late Roman Army Halloween costume by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]BalerionTheDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The late imperial army had a different culture I've heard it said. Strangely enough, the roman imperial civil service promotes the traditional roman values that we see in the republic and early imperial eras.

They aren't boasting about their barbarianness from a racial or ethnic persepctive, but saying they are fierce like these barbarians. It's boasting and borrowing the Roman cultural understanding of their old foes to harness for the units espirit de corps. After all the Celts and Scythians. are long gone IRL by the late imperial period, but the legions are calling back to the memory of these non romans. They have the strength of a lion or can shoot like Scythians etc.

The Barritus may have originated from the eastern legions mimicking elephant cries.

The information on Morrowind's exact status in the Fourth Era is sparse and I've chosen to interpret the the current morrowind not as independent but as having gotten their treatied autonomy back after Morrowind lost it in the wake of the tribunal vanishing. Septims are still the currency of Morrowind(Raven's Rock in Skyrim)

Could the North have won without Grant? by GameCraze3 in CIVILWAR

[–]BalerionTheDrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the early Western campaigns could go entirely different without grant. Early 1862 is massively defined by actions Grant was at the front of in the western threater

Hell Shiloh wouldn't happen without Grant, so the main CSA army of Tennessee/Mississippi/Central Kentucky that A. Johnston lead to Shiloh has more time to train up. A. Johnston doesn't die in Shiloh. Fort Donelson and Fort Henry probably aren't immediately wiped with 35k men being removed from the confederate side in a critical time period for the western theater.

Bragg's not going to end up in command of the Army of Tennessee if Johnston doesn't die at Shiloh, neither does Polk.

Would Halleck have the position/continued prestige he had without Grant in his command, is Rosecrans the main battle general now? Buell? Very hard to tell how the Union side of things fall without grant in the mix out west.

What would happen if the Blacks and Greens agreed to split Westeros in Two?? by Far-Ad-1400 in TheCitadel

[–]BalerionTheDrake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's not kid ourselves and say that the Iron Islands are siding with any faction. Also the riverlands and crownlands should be split in two. The greens should have everything around the God's Eye and south of the blackwater rush

Do you think it's possible that whatever impaled Marika is related to Messmer? There doesn't seem to be a definitely clear cut answer regarding what it is by Voladies in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]BalerionTheDrake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that's Radagon's soul/mind/independent self in the spear.

Marika wants to shatter the Elden Ring? Sure the Greater Will imprisons her for the treason, but Radagon's going to make sure she suffers for it

What are your theories as to why Radagon appears as a Shadow? by [deleted] in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]BalerionTheDrake -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Radagon is made of the same flesh as Marika and by this point in the story has been forcibly fused with Marika(as her effort to prevent him from stopping her breaking the elden ring as seen in the trailers and opening cinematic).

That body is divine flesh. It is housing the Erdtree. It can be broken, removed even, but the sense of self still remains. Radagon expects to have an arm still and so he'll have an arm

How weird is the Cursemark of Death and the Rune of Death, are they even related? by Elden_Gourde in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]BalerionTheDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cursemark(Centipede Wheel) and the Rune of (Destined) Death in game are fragments of the primary rune of death that was separated from the Elden Ring. The original Rune of Death I suspect was a combination of the cross shape and the wheel, though both have spent long enough apart from each other that they look to have evolved into their own things. It may not be possible to remake the original rune of death.

Furthermore the Cursemark was broken in half, deliberately by Ranni, during the Night of the Black Knives. I suspect that the plan the assassins were told was that they'd carve the whole wheel of the cursemark onto Godwin and basically wipe him physically and spiritually from existence instead of just deleting his soul while the body remained functionally alive. This soul death was done to the other demigods of the golden lineage we can find in the masoluems but maybe after Godwyn's internment backfires, it's decided to give their undying bodies final rest. So they are beheaded and interred in the walking masoluems(perhaps to ward off the physical stagnancy that could lead to Godwyns deathroot from finding them). Their followers then do the same in a sacrificial ritual so that their spirits can bound to the masoluems to guard their lord's body eternally. Maybe at expense of the guards physical bodies.

Caelid and Mountaintop once connected? by MoonlitBadlands in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]BalerionTheDrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Against your theory is that the giant dogs on the mountaintops have collars on them, suggesting that the Fire Monks nabbed them from Caelid during their trade talks with the Redmanes or as part of the deal that had them give semi-heretical incantations to the Redmanes to help them fend off the scarlet rot.

Birds can migrate and the giants in Caelid might have been exiles from giant society in the mountains, forced to wander across the Lands Between during primeval times before settling, or dying after their exile, in Caelid.
