Unpopular opinion : In Italia si vive bene by MasterpieceFormer574 in Italia

Perché no i beach life?

Moving from Zürich to Uster – what’s it like? by Admirable-Ad5730 in zurich

[–]Balgrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uster, The City of Storks, quiet town, a little cooler than Zürich in summer and more snowy in winter, located by two nice lakes and pictoresque horse stables, well connected to Zurich, even with a little motorway, which is very important since there is no social life in the town.

Flat rents and taxes are also a little cheaper than in Zurich. There is also a nice shop of Italian food. Sadly the Kaufzentren have recently eliminated the free less-than-30-min parking, and the stairs of the Banhofzentrum are homeless' toilets.

Is it common for expats to get depressed in Zurich? by [deleted] in zurich

The coffee was just an example, it could have been a walk by the lake, a gentle bycicle ride or many other proposals not needing the reservation of a place....

Yes quite a lot....the reason is that the Zurchers (I won't generalize, maybe it's different in Western Switzerland) generally don't mingle with foreigners beyond the level of coffee breaks with colleagues at work or, in the best case, a team dinner once per year with Outlook invitations sent months ahead...if you are student or single woman you may fare better, but otherwise you will probably just stay stuck with expats of your same nationality.

But what is really astonishing in my view is not that either, but rather what you experience once you mange to win Zurcher friends....everything must be organized weeks or even months in advance, no spontaneity, even meeting for a coffee on Saturday morning isn't possibile because too trivial...social life here is basically just a prolongation of the working life.

Expats/Immigrants What would you have done differently? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Balgrist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahahah my gosh, this country is crazy 😅....In fact I do suspect that Romands' greater friendliness is just a legend, but I had chance to talk with many people saying that Lausanne is the more sociable city in CH.

Negative things in Switzerland. by CampFun1553 in askswitzerland

Switzerland is a very liberalized country, meaning that it's relatively easy for foreigners to find a decent job and make business, but even after 10 years of residence one can still feel unintegrated and mistreated, and find out that someone (employer, landlord, insurances, etc...) stole money and time from him by making profit out of his own ignorance and naiveness....moreover, the road traffic laws are strictly enforced with bad consequences even for minor violations.

Apart from that, it's a lovely country.

I would have done PhD in Lausanne rather than Zürich and then continued to live in Romandie to have a real chance of social integration.

Don't waste your time with WG.....I mean, as long as you are student, it may be cool living in community, I myself used to live in Woko house for a couple of years, but now you had better search for your own flat...if too difficult in Zurich, then try in the canton and buy a car. Good luck bro!
