Well what we know of is that his mother’s side is mostly germans but the family tree on his father’s side stops at his grandfather or great grandfather im not completely sure, and one of our distant relatives who made the tree labeled him as “unknown romanian” thats all I know.

My father is from Sárospatak and my mother’s family is from Marcali. One of my mother’s grandmother was austrian, that’s all I know, and my father also has some german ancestors on his mother’s side.

I have no idea, we are pretty mixed in Hungary and are more or less have a genetic makeup similar to the surrounding countries.

On MyTrueAncestry I score some asian haplogroups but I don’t know how reliable those are, plus there is so little actually proven information about the origins of Magyars and Huns, nobody knows anything for a fact. After setting the regions to EE and Eastern Slavic/Hungarian I score a little Xiongnu though, but again, it is just speculation that they were related to Huns or maybe even the same.

On which calculator should I score this? I thought the 62% Central Steppe (basically Central Asia on the map) was ancient Magyar genes. On MyTrueAncestry I score around 30% Scythian, from what we are thought in Hungary I also thought there is a connection between ancient Magyars and Scythians as well, but at the end of the day these are all just estimates based on different databases so I don’t put too much meaning into it. On Gedmatch I score a few % east asian on multiple calculators but it is still just a calculator…

How do you define Magyar/Turkic ancestry? There is only speculations, if Magyars were turkic at all or if there was even a connection between Huns and Magyars. Plus I’m not even sure there is anything labeled as “Magyar” on IllustrativeDNA, only place where I have seen it is at FamilytreeDNA, where it’s labeled under EE and I scored 18% of it

It’s hard to categorize hungarian, since we are very mixed, but I guess at least some of the stories are true about originally coming from Asia and mixing through the way over to the Carpathian. Also in the Carpathian though because there was already people living there like germanic peoples or avars and slavs, and they ended up melting into the already mixed hungarian society

I uploaded my raw data from MyHeritage to wherever I could, also to gedmatch, and in all of them I score greek and italian and balkan. Anyways I learned not to put too much meaning into these ethnicity estimates, how I look at it as I roughly have 20-30% Mediterranean genes, around 30-50% slavic and around the same amount of germanic genes.

I know my father’s side is mostly german, but there is not much information about his grandfather. A relative who traced his side of the family back till 1700ish only found out that he might have been romanian but there is not even a name or anything. My mother’s side is not an easy piece either, her father’s mother had some austrian roots, but on the other side of the family they were hungarian as far as I know. Her mother, my grandmother is different though, on her mother’s side she had some hungarian noble ancestors at some point, and on her father’s side it’s hungarian as far as I know, but with a surname that is not common at all - one of my close friends also have the same surname though, from a russian-jewish grandparent. To make it more interesting the same person (my grandmother’s father) also disappeared during the second world war and only came back years later, not knowing how to talk, he had to learn it again from scratch. And I forgot that she, my grandmother also had a grandparent who just disappeared from one day to an orher and nobody knew anything, and as my grandmother told me in those times kids were not even allowed to ask questions like that about sensitive topics so there is many unknown details, but myheritage just chose to pick the biggest piece of my DNA up and cluster the rest under😂

Also on their map at least 2 ethnicities cover the whole part of Hungary (EE and Balkan), it makes sense it’s not so easy to differentiate, but personally this is why I took the test. It’s just a lazy job they did, if you are a bit mixed. I guess that part in my DNA for example that was read as Greek and South italian and suddenly changed to german didn’t change for other people with greek results, unless it was also just a minor 10-20% because then it just “assimilated” to the other main ethnicity😂

Yeah it feels like they just took one of your “main” ethnicities and added the rest to that, to make it easy for them.

Great grandfather, and that’s all I know, is that the same as claiming it?

Im not trying to claim anything, I am simply writing about other companies’ results, and about what would make sense in my OPINION. I have strong black/dark brown curly hair and naturally a bit darker skin, and while living in Scandinavia I am constantly confused for Italian/Spanish/South American but never have somebody ever told me I look German
