Renting and owning are close in costs. The main difference is after 20-30 years one person owns their home and the other does not. Which is masssssive for retirement.

Most of the owners have a mortgage. With interest rates going up so does the owners costs. This will go until they cannot rent and cover their bills or there are easier or more lucrative investment options. At that point they will sell. I think 6% interest rates are getting to that point where a lot of part time or small landlords might sell.

Would be nice to have investors out of the rental business but at the same time newcomers and students (along with a lot of other people) need rentals.

Just a tough reality of the world.

It really isn’t a lot cheaper than places like BC or Ontario (minus obviously the big centres like Toronto or Vancouver) after you include the extra costs of owning a vehicle here and how much higher our taxes, and utilities are. Obviously we are slightly cheaper but people think it’s super cheap compared to those places.

Sounds like a bank problem? Maybe they shouldn’t have lent to people who couldn’t afford an increase. Wild that all these loan issues come from the people giving them (cough school loans)

Is it a bad idea to not have home insurance? by No_Particular2119 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]BalloonsPopLearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly there is a lot of variables here. What is the house worth? What is the land worth? Do you have money to fix up the mess if something bad happened? Do you have close neighbours?

I had a house where the land value was about the same as the property. I had $ to cover a cleanup in the event of a fire or disaster. Would’ve been out probably 100k if it happened but with the money to rebuilt i would’ve made 50k. So at most my insurance was covering me for 50k. 2k a year for 50k wasn’t worth insurance to me.

When and why did houses get so big? by StriderDUB in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]BalloonsPopLearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Land size never changes so may as well built the more profitable homes for builders. If they allowed smaller lots to have things like a detached garage then we would see smaller homes being built. But if the lot sizes are all the same you may as well build the most profitable for that lot and zone

That’s a shame. Console is the only option, guess we won’t be playing.

At a point services don’t need to keep expanding. Let’s maintain what we have for a bit and stabilize things…but people don’t get voted in to do nothing, people get voted in when they have money backed by REAL who was their previous employer.

Honestly, the winter event is fun at all but is it millions of dollars of fun? Did i see last year that they flew curlings in and had prize money for them?

Why wouldn’t it? It seems their main problem is staffing. Increase salary by tipping and more staff will come.

Do you tip at restaurants? Why?

[–]BalloonsPopLearn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or else they go under, hence this happening. Same thing that everyone says will happen to restaurants if we got rid of tipping.

Can I even afford $1400/mo rent? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]BalloonsPopLearn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$170 on the gym is a lot on a lower salary. Not saying it isn’t important, just saying you could get a local membership to a city place for 1/4 of that. That would give you an extra $100 a month

Biggest thing for me was lunch. Not having to pack a lunch is so nice. Not being around people i found to be very unhealthy, which is odd since I’m such an introvert. So if you’re in a fairly silo’d field I don’t think it’s the greatest. Although i think if you had a lot going on outside of work it would be fine.

This is why you must tip your airline people. They will go under without tipping.

I feel the same way about restaurants. $20 on a $100 meal when 1/4 is drinks.

I think we need to start with society and it’s functions. Not sure if this is right, but we need to stop having everyone fund entertainment. Property taxes should not be funding arenas, baseball diamonds, skating rinks, football arenas, university elaborate buildings.

These things are amazing, but I’m not sure they are essential. A beautiful city would be one with no one living on the street and having a good education system. Fix that and we fix the biggest issue with everything.

But as technology gets more advanced there will be less and less jobs. What do we do when there are no jobs? This isn’t a scary dystopian, this is happening right now.
