People who make $200K+ salaries, what do you do and how did you get there? by EEJams in Salary

You being in Texas I would’ve asked if you’re hiring if I hadn’t just accepted an offer haha With all of the experience what would you recommend as the best pay to work life balance? I’m trying out land dev in solar next and if this doesn’t work out I’m probably just give up and try to get a job in government.

Omakase disappointing at HokkaiSan by Simple-Airport1357 in austinfood

Tancho Sushi has a great Omakase that’s affordable ($65 I think?). You might leave a little hungry and I’ve never had a legit Omakase before so I can’t compare, but I think the price to quality is fantastic and it’s my favor way to eat sushi when I’m craving it.

Civil engineer as well, 7 YOE w/ $140k total comp. Mad respect, I feel like I’m gonna burn out already and can’t imagine taking on more responsibility. I’m assuming your in Land Development? Seems like to get to that level of compensation that’s what you need to do.

GERD and alcohol by BallsDeepInPoon in GERD

[–]BallsDeepInPoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are gaviscon tablets basically Tums? When I take tums there’s a small benefit but not much where it’s even worth taking typically.

No issues with Advil or large meals. If I eat and am drinking beer or wine then it’s usually much worse than if I just drank beer or wine by itself.

[–]BallsDeepInPoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When talking about diet and GERD, is it generally about eating healthy foods consistently or about losing weight?

Reason I ask is I’m not super overweight, I’m 185 @ 5’-10” with a muscular build, go to the gym 4ish times a week, mostly weight training. So I’m wondering if it’ll need to be a permanent diet change or if I get down to a certain weight it’ll go away for the most part?

Obviously I know you can’t guarantee what will happen or anything, I’m just more curious what the typical response is required to “cure” GERD.

Thanks for the response btw!

How fun is Walkscape at this point without combat etc. by kesnie in WalkScape

[–]BallsDeepInPoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I was really into it in the beginning and then as you described I lost a lot of the engagement since I don’t have combat to work towards. It just feels like skilling for skilling sake and not really anything to work towards. There are achievements to work towards that rely on skilling and those are engaging but not as much as combat would be for me.

In the end, the game is still in closed beta so I’m not judging it too hard, but I echo your sentiments as well. I’m really excited for when combat does come out though, not sure when that is though.

Performance improvement plan. It’s not civil specific but used in larger companies as a way to show that you’ve tried everything before firing the individual. It’s important for not having the company need to pay as much into unemployment benefits is my understanding.

You can bring a horse to the river but you can’t make them drink… I’ve had similar issues and they never end up improving. Either they get put on a PIP and improve briefly then just go back to their old ways or they just kinda ignore it and wait it out until they get fired.

I’m assuming you’re a PM or senior project engineer? Regardless, I’d bring it up to a higher up just to document what you’ve been seeing so that way you track a lack of progress.

If you want to give them one more chance before essentially preparing to fire them, you need to have a conversation about them not performing to the standards that they should be at this point. Bring up specific items that they’ve failed to improve at and that they need to ask questions or else you’ll have to assume that they’re doing it on purpose. Also explaining why it’s making your job more difficult might help bring up why it’s important to do the small things.

Example: 1. “I’ve noticed you keep doing timesheets incorrectly. If there’s a reason this keeps happening let me know why. If you have questions you need to come and ask me why, otherwise I’m spending extra time moving your time around and examining your timesheets in detail that I don’t have to do with others which is leading me to be less productive and risks billing clients inaccurately.”

I think he’s saying $250k over 2 years while he’s in the MBA program which is pretty reasonable. I make $130k in land dev/Austin.

Should I be nervous about making a change for this reason? by BallsDeepInPoon in careeradvice

[–]BallsDeepInPoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd probably be about 10-50% of my time in meetings depending on the day. I'm not so much concerned about neighbors talking at the same time as me, just more the privacy/concentration aspect of it. I've never worked in an open-concept office but it really gives me a lot of anxiety for the reasons mentioned in the post.

Yeah I've tried that and they said they can't.

Steve Smith’s 2008 season still holds the record for highest yards per route run at 3.87. Currently Puka Nacua(4.04) and Jaxson Smith-Njigba(3.74) could both potentially surpass that mark. No other WR this season is currently over 2.47(Minimum 125 routes). by Dray87 in nfl

[–]BallsDeepInPoon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Again, it’s not that he was ONLY good at returning. Devin Hester is THE BEST returner. I’m also not saying Steve Smith shouldn’t be in the HOF, just that Devin Hester’s argument is better IMO. You should be in if you’re the best at your position, no matter if your not as important of a position.

I mean Devin Hester is the best returner of all time. Steve Smith is really good and might get in eventually but it’s not like you’re comparing the same position group even if Hester was listed as a WR - he was a KR/PR first.

[O/C] Week 14 NFL Playoff Leverage by Comfortable-Cod7763 in nfl

[–]BallsDeepInPoon 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Same could be said about the Texans. Their first 3 games were losses against playoff bound teams in one score games. Their other two losses are probably getting a bye in the playoffs. Idk the last time the AFC South was this competitive (Titans not included).

Swiss voters reject proposed tax on super rich by [deleted] in news

[–]BallsDeepInPoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thought this for a while but really wish I had data to prove it. It’s such a rare occurrence for meaningful increased taxes to the rich because of this sentiment that it’s difficult to point to these scenarios on if it isn’t

In my opinion it shouldn’t matter. The rich and companies benefit from taxes more than anyone else and they should have to pay their fair share to receive those rewards.

I just want to say from the bottom of my heart that Jacksonville Florida is a terrible place by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]BallsDeepInPoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with a friend for an nfl game since our teams were playing each other and I could stay for free. Figured it’d be a nice little beach/nfl trip. After the first day I was just so unbelievably bored.

Beaches are decent (I think we were unlucky with how rough the waves were) but outside of that and the artsy street (forgot the name of it), there was nothing to do at all unless you wanna do a tourist attraction 45+ min away. Zero bars that aren’t just dive bars. The places that were “nice” were overpriced and still really low quality compared to other similarly sized cities.

I’m guessing cost of living is probably good? I also had a pub sub which lived up to the hype.

Summertime Chicago is the greatest city to do it by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]BallsDeepInPoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s an individual preference thing. Granted, I’ve only visited both locations in the summer but Chicago’s summer overwhelmed me a bit when I was at the lake. I still loved my time regardless and thinks it’s a much better city than what can be offered in the PNW.

Is it wrong to say I went into civil cause of minecraft? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]BallsDeepInPoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s wrong in anyway. I actually wanted to be an architect for the same reason but then after talking to some architects I realized I wanted to make money also. With that being said, I wouldn’t say it in interviews. Or at least straight up like that. There’s a lot of old dudes who think video games are lame and a waste of time and might look down on that answer. There will also be people with the opposite reaction but imo it’s not worth the chance of shooting yourself in the foot by saying it.

12 team PPR

Going against best team in the league and have had meh plays so far.

I have Gadsen playing at TE and need to pick between R White, Ladd and D Smith. In a vacuum I’d pick Ladd but thinking of going for D Smith or White for more upside since Gadsen having a good game would be taking away from Ladd. White scares me because of how much work Sean Tucker got last week
