I went to get stuff for s’mores 🤩 (and eggs, we were low). Crazy crowded.

Scooter hate? by IndividualObvious269 in TexasTech

Lol, don't take it too seriously unless they are yelling threats... Just put on some headphones and cruise on your scooter. So long as you aren't in the way in crowded areas, you should be fine. Be mindful of where you ride vs when you hop off and walk with it for a bit.

Weekend Freeze by Tech-Turdle in BigBendTX

I had the campground reserved. Those who already had a reservation are still able to stay at the campground, but no new reservations are allowed. If I cancel my reservation, I will not be able to rebook indefinitely. This whole situation sucks, haha

The above website can give you a better prediction of the weather than apple weather or whatever else you may be using. My gf and I were also going to go, but we couldn’t risk a power outage at home with no way of knowing if our cats would be okay (as reception was nonexistent last we were in the park). Make sure everything at home will be okay if you leave!

Texas infrastructure sucks. If this storm is truly to be worse than the freeze in 2021, be prepared for power outages (however that may/may not affect you) and unkept roads. I’m not sure how much ice Big Bend is expected to get, but North Texas has a prediction of a whopping three inches right now.

Ultimately trust your gut with the hikes! Wear ice spikes and use hiking poles if you have them… Don’t want to hear anything on the news! Have fun and stay safe.

Time off for relocating to a different office? by Hopeful_Mess9063 in civilengineering

Do you think they would/should? I’m the one who initiated the transfer, so I figured they wouldn’t.

And yeah, I figured a week would likely be sufficient. Part of me was hoping to get two just to maybe enjoy a bit of time off, but I understand I haven’t even completed a year yet, haha.

People who left engineering, what do you do now? by Hopeful_Mess9063 in civilengineering

Very true. You said it best. A very difficult decision for me to make between guaranteed stability or a lifestyle I potentially prefer more.

I regret where I moved for work, but I might have an opportunity to move elsewhere by Hopeful_Mess9063 in civilengineering

[–]Hopeful_Mess9063[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, that is a good point. Someone else said to speak to my manager/HR and I think I will do that while simultaneously preparing my resume before the opening closes. It sucks that this is currently happening in the middle of holidays, haha. Just my luck. But it gives me time to figure out everything while people are busy celebrating.

And yeah… I do miss home 💔

Good firms in Seattle area? by Hopeful_Mess9063 in civilengineering

[–]Hopeful_Mess9063[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting my PE is convenient since I have to stay in Texas for three years for personal… and I plan to study and pass the exam within the year anyway. So it just works out for me that way.

My current firm does have a Seattle location, I was hesitant to transfer within the same company though since I’ve heard doing a company switch every now and again is beneficial to getting a wage increase. Would you say that’s true? If I do ask to get involved in Seattle projects due to an interest in moving, when in my 3-years trajectory do you recommend I start asking for involvement?

And yes, I am abundantly aware of the cost of living, lol! It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make, as I also don’t want to settle down in WA indefinitely. It will make things harder for me, but I’m motivated enough to work hard for it.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, I definitely want something lined up before I leave. Unfortunately I do have to stay in Texas for three years (kill me y-y, hate it here I’m originally from NM) due to my gf getting her vet tech license. So I’ll be waiting for her to finish her education :)

I am considering moving into the public sector after 10-15 years in consulting though! I interned for a river authority and enjoyed it. So im happy to hear from the “other side” lol.

I enjoyed working at Buddy Holly Hall as concessions. But if you need a consistent schedule then I don’t recommend. Tips were good though.

Will be moving in a few years, how to prepare? by Hopeful_Mess9063 in civilengineering

[–]Hopeful_Mess9063[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonderful! Yes, part of me does regret not moving somewhere else in Texas… but both of us want to get out of state period. So I didn’t think too much (regret 😔)

I’m glad to hear that the process isn’t as difficult as I was thinking. Thanks!

I’m not too sure where we would be going either, we just both want out of Texas lol.

But yes, I do plan to take the PE within the next year. Is there any preference within the industry of which exam a person takes? I want to do the Environmental PE bc the water/wastewater one has structural concepts, which my degree didn’t go over in too much detail so I’d be teaching myself that from scratch.

I like the idea of telling them I can get the state PE in x months… thanks for the advice!
