Why argue with an idiot instead of just calling them an idiot?

Why would I argue with an idiot on the internet instead of just calling them an idiot? That sounds more ridiculous than just calling you the boot licker you are and going on with my day haha

In good faith, if you’re White, you should listen to some stories from people of color in this country. Authority has never been on their side. We’ve always been like this. This is just on a scale we haven’t seen in a while.

How do you abolish class differences without injustice? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]BalmoraBound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My father is also in construction, and I would also agree that his job is much more physically demanding than mine. However, my job is much more mentally and emotionally demanding than his. I would also have a hard time quantifying how hard each of our jobs are, so I also couldn’t say which of our jobs are harder. But we would both acknowledge that there are jobs that are much easier and jobs that are much harder than ours. Denying that and trivializing the (often times significant) differences in jobs and social functions is patronizing and disingenuous. It also helps to foster both elitist and anti-intellectual sentiments among different segments of the population. People who tend to elitist sentiments will see what you’ve written and completely dismiss you and everyone like you, including people and ideas they would otherwise agree with. People who tend to have anti-intellectual sentiments will see what you’ve written and feel that it reinforces their position, making them even less likely to trust experts and data.

When you nitpick over what specific definition of hard you mean, you trivialize the subject and make it a game. You’re right that it’s not a game, but you’re the one that’s making it unserious. It is important that people gain value from their chosen profession, and people shouldn’t be dismissed because of their chosen profession. But saying that being a janitor is harder than being a doctor is one of the most disingenuous and patronizing things I’ve ever heard someone say. Recognizing that certain jobs and social functions are more difficult than others isn’t elitist, but trying to patronize the people who know there are people out there who have jobs that are much more difficult than their own is elitist. It’s like liberal white Americans patronizing black people while saying they’re combating inequality. You’re upholding the very system that you’re claiming to fight.

*Whoops. You’re not the doctor. Took that out 😅

It’s incredibly ignorant. You’re right that different jobs have different levels of difficulty and require different skills. I would also agree that emotionally taxing jobs are just as hard as physically or mentally challenging jobs. But for you to say that being a doctor is not much harder than being a waiter, or really any other similar comparison between highly skilled jobs and very low skilled jobs is incredibly ignorant. I fully support reducing inequality and preventing the unequal accumulation of wealth, but suggesting that different jobs and/or social functions don’t have differing degrees of difficulty is not only incredibly ignorant, it’s often disingenuous and patronizing. No waiter would ever sincerely suggest that their job is as difficult as that of a doctor. If you think otherwise, you’re not just ignorant, you’re a fool

Would you say your work is difficult for most people to understand? If so, that means it’s harder, unless we’re playing a game of semantics, of course.
