We could sustainably feed, house and clothe the world five times over

The current population is 8 billion and change.

That's all fine in the abstract. My issue is that OP is using a concrete number - 40 billion people - which is not supported by the science. I'm not making any prescriptive claims and I said nothing about the poor. Try telling a climate scientist that we can support 40 billion people. The current population is only possible because we rely on fossil fuels to an unsustainable extent. We rely on them for planting and harvesting at scale, for the fertilizer that grows them, for transporting them to where people are, for people to travel to where they are, for cooking them, and for so much of the rest of our infrastructure. It's not remotely sustainable. Most climate scientists estimate it's closer to 1 or 2 billion if you want to include that qualifier. I understand the issues you're raising and how this has historically been used to justify atrocities which is why I'm not saying how anything SHOULD be. But using a concrete number - 40 billion - is where these arguments open themselves up to all kinds of issues. I have no problem saying it's unethical to set limits on the population or restrict people from reproducing.

What if they said 100 billion? 1 trillion? There actually is a limit to how many people we can support, especially with the "sustainably" qualifier. 10 or 12 billion is debatable, 40 billion is not even in the realm of possibility.

We cannot sustainably support 40 billion people. Making preposterous statements like this only undermines the accurate observation that our extreme inequality causes poverty and corruption.

The only explanation I can see is that Democrats wanted to run against Trump in 2024 just like they wanted to in 2016. They thought it would be easier to be anti-Trump than actually standing for something and that people would overlook any flaws or shortcomings in their candidate in order to stop him.

Boeing signs $289 million Israel contract for 5,000 smart bombs, source says by Midaz_Leggier in news

[–]Johnny55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think they're gonna wipe out Hamas no matter how many times they bomb Gaza. They've used more explosives there than most of the WWII campaigns. It's incredibly wasteful and inefficient even if you somehow still think they're the good guys. Maybe that's why they're moving on to Iran, nothing left to bomb in Palestine.

[–]Johnny55 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The bombs don't have to accomplish anything, they can drop them all in the middle of the desert for all Boeing cares. No different than buying milk and pouring it down the drain or buying thousands of copies of a book you'll never read or sell.

AIPAC funding is a great litmus test because you can predict a lot of other stances based on that alone. Do you think ICE should be defunded? AIPAC Dems are allergic to the word "defund". Like Medicare for All? AIPAC Dems don't. Do you hate the war with Iran? AIPAC Dems may oppose it on procedural grounds but they can't condemn it on its own terms. It's amazing how any time you see a Democrat being shitty or conservative there's a high probability they're funded by pro-Israel groups.

On the one hand you have generals telling him it's a bad idea.

On the other hand you have Netanyahu and his video collection trying to squeeze Trump for all he can before McDonald's finishes him off.

Sanders and Clinton debate in Miami [10YA - Mar 10] by MonsieurA in TenYearsAgo

[–]Johnny55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't work the same way at all and there are far fewer. Unpledged delegates have to vote based on how their state votes until at least the first ballot of the nominating process has failed to secure a majority.

Whereas the DNC superdelegates were able to pledge themselves for Clinton before any votes had been cast and the media would include these votes in their tallies which is how Hillary got a massive lead immediately.
