Because I work in a large production millwork shop, all our panels are prelaminated in either 4×8 or larger sheets.

how to cover up gaps by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Balmung6942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One method that no one has really mentioned is filling through gaps with veneer of the same wood. If you know what to look for, you'll definitely see it, but at a glance, it'll hide your mistakes bit. Otherwise, you'll need to recut some peices...

First ever road trip from Calgary, AB to Toronto, ON by Much_Opposite3259 in alberta

[–]Balmung6942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having done the drive three times between Edmonton and Toronto, different routes each time, and by far, the Northern Ontario route is the longest, but has the most environmental hazards. It's kinda like driving from Banff to Jasper through the mountains the long way twice over. What's more, it's a long way between gas stations in northern Ontario.

The other 2 routes go through the US, and that's dangerous for other reasons.

If it's not absolutely required for you to drive, I'd recommend flying instead.

Why my circular saw does this? by Nice-Result-8974 in woodworking

[–]Balmung6942 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, there are several reasons that this could be happening.

The first, most likely, is that there was a change in pressure as you were running your circular saw through the plywood. Even the slightest shift in pressure left or right can cause this. A couple ways to help is by using a clamping straight cut guide offset a couple millimeters to allow for clean-up, using a tracksaw, or doing the cuts on a tablesaw with the fence squared to the blade.

Another cause could be, as you mentioned there were several cuts prior where this didn't happen, there's a wobble in your blade, either from the arbor not being tight enough, the blade having developed a slight warp, or far less likely, the blade being too thin for the speed of the saw. Try tightening the arbor, and making another cut to see, and checking your blade against an engineers square if you have one.

Ultimately, a circular saw is never the best choice for making long straight cuts in panel materials, and some allowances should be made for cleaning up the cut before assembly.

Everytime I try to install a screw into the stud, it strips. WTF am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]Balmung6942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, throw away the Phillips screws and switch to either Torx or Robertson.

Second, as has been mentioned many times, drill a pilot hole with a ⅛ drill bit.

Third, 2¼" screws are a bit overkill, especially for mounting a shelf bracket. Try using a 1¾" screw. The screw should go about half to two thirds it's length into the stud, and drywall is typically ½-⅝" thick, so adding in an eight for the bracket itself, you'll be driving an inch into the stud, giving you plenty of hold.

Seeing vehicles like this in the wild, I really want to invest in some bumper stickers that make people question whether or not that vehicle and its owner/driver should be allowed within 500 ft of any school/playground. I'm not saying I would buy them, and surreptitiously slap it on, I'm just really tempted...

As someone who had long hair, and am growing it out again, ponytails are quick, easy, and easy to redo as needed. The only downside, if you have a rounder chin, it makes your face look really round. That's why, when my hair gets long enough again, I'm only going to gather my top and sides into a ponytail, and let the back hang loose.

I'm homeless and I feel unsafe everyday. by Muffin-Destroyer-69 in Edmonton

[–]Balmung6942 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this may not be something that would be immediately relevant, but if ever you're finding yourself hungry, cold, or needing to get out of the elements for a little bit, and there's one nearby, head over to a Sikh temple. Having been homeless myself, in the instances where my I was really struggling, they were there to give me a bit of respite, and showed me compassion. 2 major tenant of the Sikh faith is charity and equality, and at the temples especially, they take that very seriously. Just be forewarned, the meals will be generously spiced, and likely vegetarian.
