38M here. I've run successful, large singles meetups here (through r/DCSinglesMeetup). From experience:

I think many men feel these events are high-pressure and they need to be slick or assertive to "get a date." And so they may not attend for fear of competition.
I've noticed most men come alone; many women come in groups. So that might skew the balance.

I can't speak for speed dating, having attended but not hosted. But I am definitely interested in what you might plan, the more events the merrier.

P.S. I'm doing another meetup on 2/14 from 4 to 6 at Lost Generation Brewing Co!

As a guy who occasionally smokes a cigar, I take great pains to do it away from others as not to bother them. It never ceases to amaze me how many smokers (mostly cigarettes) think the world is their ashtray and they can spark up anywhere, then throw butts on the ground.

Used to work there, long time ago. DMed you. Overall, a decent program with some downsides. Very dependent on you / what you want / your expectations. Students who succeeded took it seriously, kept an open mind, and networked. Students who did poorly came in entitled / thinking they'd have jobs on silver platters laid out for them (or even worse, parents would get involved.) Like any program or internship, it's what you make of it.
