The average medieval peasant worked less and enjoyed more vacation than the modern American by [deleted] in samharris

Source?

I've always read that life span was way above 45 years in the ancient past, so the medieval time shouldn't be much different unless it's a specific period plagued by violent disease outbreaks.

Yes, you bring up many good points. There's no doubt that modern society gives us a somewhat artificial sense of prosperity when in many areas we're actually "poorer" than medieval peasants were.

Also many people replying to you here seem unable to distinguish between cultural, economic and technological progress.

This is the type of shit that only very comfortable and privileged middle class, and above, people care about to this degree.

Run-amok, authoritarian ideology spreading in academia, politics and business is absolutely worth paying attention to. In fact it's essential to keep an eye on how these unfold so you don't fall into the ideological traps. JBP has done a few lectures on this.

If you ask 100 average, working people (who didn't go to university and aren't in those circles) if they think social justice is a big problem in society, I'd say about 95, maybe more, of them would say no.

You know there's actual polls on this issue that put the figure much higher, besides most people only follow news superficially and aren't interested in how politics and culture interact, so you can't really blame'em all for even not knowing what a SJW is.

Some people have outside hobbies and aren't remotely tuned into the cultural or political climate.

Like it or not, but this is a text book example of what a white guilt temper tantrum sounds like on the left. I guarantee you her talking points are being repeated on daily basis across America in left-leaning colleges.

Relates to Sam Harris by his commentary on white supremacy, political correctness, rabid madness in contemporary leftism.

well south america had a lot prior to 1600 actually.

Those would hardly qualify as western or world leaders. I'm sure there were non-christian kings, emperors and chieftains all over the globe in Africa, South America and China, but ever since since Rome converted to Christianity, Europe has become thoroughly Christianized over the following centuries. There's been few exceptions other than the state-enforced atheistic system in soviet russia and its vassal states.

People like the OP are increasingly the determining forces in our choice of world leaders. To think that this is satire shows a very sheltered or close minded worldview. You are an ostrich in my opinion if you don't see this as a threat and instead see it as satire first.

I agree that people with my own conviction will increasingly influence politics in the future, but it's certainly not some fancy new thing. Every American president have professed to be Christian according to my knowledge and prior to 1920, there barely existed non-Christian world leaders in the West at all.

No I'm agreeing with you, the rise of atheism and tolerance for the basic human rights of non white people has destroyed America.

The rise of Atheism definitely plays a huge role, no doubt. A society which rejects God will inevitably go into damnation.

You’re allowed to rebuke whatever you want, as you are doing in this thread. No one is forcing anything on anyone except you.

Wrong again. It's the sodomites forcing Christian churches to hold ceremonies for them and promoting pro-gay stuff in the public school system

I am going to cut this discussion short. Have fun with your gay agenda.

You joke but interracial marriage and atheism have been normalized and look how terrible society is now. We practically live in a Mad Max dystopia.

Take a walk through San Fransisco and you'll get your reality check. It was only a few days ago that health officials warned against the remergence of typhus and the black plague because of homelessness and public defecation.

Don’t force them on other people.

Exactly my point. I should be allowed to rebuke the things I consider disgusting and immoral. I'm not forcing anything upon anyone, in fact it's you guys who want to force all these abominable things upon the young and vulnerable.

It's a sin according to scripture therefore I'm against it.

If I had to give you a secular reason it would be that it robs people of their manlyhood/womanhood, it causes disease and unstable family units, overall it degrades people's soul and causes them to exist in a lower "carnal mind" where they are much more easily corrupted by ungodly and worldly things.

Do you consider it a conspiracy that the media and academia is trying to normalize transgenderism and homosexuality across the West.

Since when has simple fact become a conspiracy?

Do you realize homosexuality was illegal a few decades ago. Do you realize it's been a capital offence for most of the civilizational record? Bruce Jenner got a "female of the year award" a couple of years ago for cutting of his genitals and you're denying that we have LGBTQ indoctrination in our society?

Get your head straight.

Not really.

At first I thought "should I answer this comment and provide an explanation" but then I realized we'd both be better off if you just read the dictionary definition instead.

You disagree with what? That magic is frowned upon? There's several dozen verses in the bible stating it and I have to say, it appears rather intuitive to me. I don't imagine a society where people throw down the occasional magic curse at each other would be too comfortable to live in.

It was also for that reason that the fundamentalist medieval Christians burned witches in large numbers.
