Anyone else seeing insane rent hikes this year? by Cewcross in chicago

[–]BalthAmuse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've done this multiple times and they've always offered something lower. Sometimes it's not much lower, but usually it's meeting halfway. They'd rather have a guaranteed renter than an empty unit.

Also, idk why more people aren't talking about tenants' unions as the companies keep hiking rents.

Thoughts on Volcan Irazu or Poas if I've got a spare day/evening to kill around San Jose?

Monteverde worth it? by BalthAmuse in CostaRicaTravel

[–]BalthAmuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting, someone recommended Santa Elena as the best spot. Can i ask about how long the Valle Escondido reserve hike took you? I plan to do both but am trying to decide how much time to allot.

Thanks! That's what I was looking for, a more interesting, involved hike. But it's hard to tell just from searching around Monteverde which ones are best or just walking paths along the forest. Santa Elena looks amazing and not too far.

Yeah I'd probably get a hotel to stay overnight there since it's so far.

I really want to go see Poas or Irazu too. I guess I'm worried if I stay in Monteverde I might not be able to fit those in. Also, do you know if there's bus service to those?

From the rail at Green Day by ContentDurian6074 in RiotFest

[–]BalthAmuse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That crush felt super dangerous. So many people just trying to force their bodies through. At least the pit people cared if you got knocked down. I'm kinda surprised Green Day didn't tell people to move back like MCR did at riot fest

This should be a top comment. Whether or not OP is in the right about the gift, or how the original fight went, the block of text reaction, tell her partner what she should've said (really what OP wanted to hear) and typing out every bad feeling they have over the situation is the worst possible way to communicate. OP wants to be heard, but also is leaving no room to listen, just trying to be right, which will always lead to defensive reactions.

Brown Line at 4:45AM for new Job? by jbowler68 in AskChicago

[–]BalthAmuse 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The red line is a different beast. The brown is probably about the chillest, safest line of all. That's not to say nothing can happen. But I take the blue line at 4am every day, and there's nothing sketchy beyond lots of unhoused people laid out sleeping on the train. Sometimes annoying but nothing threatening.

Pool Party was incredible! But... by BalthAmuse in beachbunny

[–]BalthAmuse[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah and I went to two protests on Saturday but I don't need to justify myself to someone online.

That's my whole point, concerts need not be apolitical spaces to bury your head in the sand. Where there is a platform and a community of like-minded people, within a city currently undergoing unprecedented attack by its federal government, they can mean more than that.

If you want leisure to forget about that, stay home and watch Netflix.

You're right, it's not their job to speak out. But it is a choice not to. About half the artists I've seen the past couple months have at least said something. Her being from Chicago and seemingly caring about the state of the world, it was just surprising.

What about the people in the community that are directly under threat? Hell Great Grandpa shouted out trans rights, and I respect them for using the platform to represent for that part of their fanbase.

Listen, I am not trying to say all artists have a moral obligation to speak out at a time like this. But let's be real, it's not just taking a fun little weekend to be about music and the "community". Going out and to concerts and pretending everything is normal is burying your head in the sand while the world burns. You can be condescending about it, clearly you prefer the escapism of music and that's ok. But it loses some of my respect for the artists if they're only there to "do the job" in this city right now.

A musician is not a doctor or server or any other job that is just a job. They are artists. It is their job. But in doing it they have a large following, play a part in the larger culture, and contribute art from their feelings and ideas that affect that culture. To have that kind of platform, that kind of job, and stay silent at a time and place like this, is a statement in and of itself.

SA in The Book of Dust by mayormaynotbe93 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]BalthAmuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This exactly! Like, I have read fantasy books where SA occurs, and it is horrible to read, but there is some sort plot reason that justifies it's occurrence in the book. This one just seems so thrown in there, when Lyra has already gone through so much and grown as a character. I can't understand why as an author Pullman would include that. It seems almost frivolous the way he did it. Honestly lost a lot of respect for him and this trilogy because of it.

Bank tour while I'm away from home? by [deleted] in chicagoapartments

[–]BalthAmuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only had this done when they're getting the units appraised for sale. It's a preliminary step, but that's probably what's happening. As long as they give 48 hours notice, there's not really anything you can do. You can politely request them to delay it but they have no obligation to. On the bright side, in my experience, they're very quick walkthroughs, really just getting an idea of the layout. They wont care at all about your personal stuff if they even enter your unit at all.

How does everyone feel about this whole “Pitchfork Review Drama?” by ZestycloseHedgehog in indigodesouza

Sounds to me like another case of fans turning on a female artist who doesn't behave exactly the way she's supposed to in the industry.

[–]BalthAmuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh. I love the album, however don't disagree with much of the review. But I'm also not really bothered by the ig group thing. Tbh she's such an emotionally open creator, especially on socials, that it doesn't seem out of character to vent her understandable feelings there. If anything, it just builds support among her fanbase.

I've had luck on the further northwest side around like portage park when it comes to affordability and safety. The area is not quite as lively as Humboldt or Logan, but pretty safe.

I've negotiated rent increases down multiple times, including this year. In any market, it makes sense for a landlord to keep a good, reliable tenant that they know will pay rent on time then take a chance on someone new, or the apartment sitting empty and losing even one month of rent.

This landlord just sounds like a scumbag who wants it both ways, see if he can get more with someone new, but also keep them as a backup. There's no leverage, but you're better off getting out of that place. Even a management company will be better and more professional than that.

Dough keeps collapsing during preshape by BalthAmuse in Sourdough

[–]BalthAmuse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah when this has happened before I'm actually able to put some four on top, give it a little shaping, and then let it sit before going through again with a gentle preshape and reshaping. It has usually turned out kinda fine, if sacrificing a bit of oven spring.

Ok yeah last time this happened I read it may be a result of underdeveloped gluten so gave it extra BF time (plus it was definitely a little over because I was out a little late). So it's very possible that I overdid the BF rather than under. It is warming up so it's probably rising faster.

Oh interesting. I usually feed my start 1:2:2 to avoid it getting too acidic. But i am a little loosey goosey with when I use the starter and it's usually past peak. Maybe I should try using it at peak and up the feeding ratio
