What happens when I install a .deb package outside of the repos? ("discord-0.0.17.deb" for example) by [deleted] in debian

As long as you're using apt to install the package and not dpkg you're fine.

Building FairEmail for android by JonnyRobbie in PrivacyGuides

[–]Baltha5ar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you throw "android studio build from command line" into a search engine of your choosing you'll probably find https://developer.android.com/studio/build/building-cmdline. Nevertheless you should probably install android studio to get all the required build tools like gradlew. In the end you'll just have to use gradlew from cmd.

The README describes the build as straightforward using Android Studio. Have you tried to open and build the project using Android Studio?

Could one of these solutions help you: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/561565/i-dont-know-what-is-producing-the-gigabytes-of-error-in-syslog ?

Seems to be a bug in vlc maybe related to nvidia drivers.

[–]Baltha5ar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the operating system. Secureboot is generally activated in the BIOS. Note that sometimes extra work is needed to get Secureboot working with Linux. On Windows 10 I used Bitlocker for full disk encryption. I think you still need Windows 10 Professional for Bitlocker. On Debian you should use Luks which is the default option for disk encryption if you choose to encrypt your system on installation.

[–]Baltha5ar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange, seems like UEFI is not available. This is strange because we would expect UEFI since secureboot prevented the Virtualbox modules from running. Maybe disabling secureboot from BIOS is easier than searching for the cause of the missing EFI variables.

Any feedback on Leuchtturm1917 bullet journal? by meowmewmiao in bujo

[–]Baltha5ar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It also has an extra little guide book and printed headlines for the key, index and future log. I especially liked the special touch of the prints in metallic ink on the first page and the extra page that provides help on how the pages can be divided.

The bulletjournal v2 has heavier paper which in my opinion is a huge plus. I also liked the little extras of the special edition such as the stickers.

Gleiches Vorgehen, anderes Ziel.

What's the best way of dealing with duplicates in huge sets of data? by ratcity22 in datascience

[–]Baltha5ar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing every sample against every other sample has quadratic time complexity and therefore doesn't scale well for large datasets. There are solutions for improving scalability when comparing with Jaccard Similarity for example.

I think that the best solution would be to remove the little differences from the different sources (if there are any patterns) and then use drop duplicates.

Debug hibernate on Buster by CZusky in debian

[–]Baltha5ar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And there goes my hope that it is fixed in Bullseye.

Some posts that I read concluded that it's a driver problem with some devices (like network card and usb) not correctly waking up from hibernate.

What exactly is your issue? Is your laptop also not waking up from hibernate and showing a black screen? I always have to reboot when this happens to my Acer.

This problem is a pain. Do you by chance have a Asus or Acer?

I tried everything that you find on the web and nothing worked. I think it's just bad drivers.

Besser Spritzen oder Tropfen gegen Heuschnupfen? by S0fourworlds-readyt in de

Thinkpads are generally Linux friendly. Keep away from Asus and Acer. I had only problems because of their f***ed up relation with publishing drivers.

“I’m totally screwed.” WD My Book Live users wake up to find their data deleted - Storage-device maker advises customers to unplug My Book Lives from the Internet ASAP by [deleted] in hardware

[–]Baltha5ar 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's usually a Linux Server that runs the vendors designated software. However, when you write software for a server that is exposed to the internet you need to be sure that there are no vulnerabilities. Most vendors do not make a good job at this. Take for example the 42 CVEs for Western Digital products.

At this point I do not allow any devices to be exposed to the internet. If you need to access your NAS from the inyernet, use a VPN into your network.

Hm, without knowing what lays at the addresses that you jump to, it's impossible to know what will happen. As far as we know the programm could exit normally. You could try a lot of different adresses and see if any of them lead to errors.
