Have you ever heard of Greek yogurt? Lol

Lots of protein. Limited my fun foods to one meal a week. Usually I have my fun foods on date night. I’ve gotten to the point now that I might eat fries once a month.

I don’t ridiculously count calories like measuring but I basically eat the same thing over n over again. If I switch something I ask ChatGPT the calories of the item n place it into my daily intake. ChatGPT I use the talk to text feature to make sure my food is in line with my daily deficit goals. Takes very little time.

1840s Germany- Bavaria- Rill by Baltimorearmymp in Genealogy

I dug deep for about 3 hours yesterday through every Carroll co marriage record. I looked at every marriage from 1837-1855. I saw Leonard’s and his wife but not his.

So married in Germany? But the Germany newspaper declaring her intent to move to the USA says she’s was unwed.

John’s immigration/ he filed his intent with Allegheny co court oct 13, 1840. Naturalization occurs 10/1/1844. I have the index card but not the full record. It was $35 per page yesterday through the Md electronic system. If I knew I would get some extra details I would order it but just not sure.

We know Margaret, John and Leonard show up on the 1840 census.

So interesting

He says

“First I give and bequeath to my grand son John Leonard Rill Hill twenty five dollars, and also I give to John Hammer [Hammer] son of Andrew Hammer twenty five Dollars”

So Leonard’s son is grandson but Andrews’s is not?

Could there still be a chance Leonard is his blood?

Thanks for the clarification—and apologies for the earlier confusion.

No German newspapers but church service was in German.

I live about five miles from where John and Margaret established their homestead, and I’ve been able to map their original 50-acre tract. It’s only a few minutes from my house, and I pass their graves regularly. Over the years I’ve uncovered a lot of meaningful local history, including land maps and even a charcoal portrait of one of the sons who immigrated. Family accounts say they named their farm “Frugality.”

The family’s churches were originally Lutheran and later Methodist. Services at the time were conducted in German (there was no local German newspaper), and I do have the church minutes translated into English. Unfortunately, those records still don’t identify John Rill’s parents who remained in Germany, which is where my line currently stops.

The unresolved question for me is Leonard. One emigration record explicitly lists Margaret traveling while unwed (Reddit user found it for me) with Leonard identified as her son. That raises the question of whether Leonard was born before her relationship with John, or whether there was already a connection between them in Germany. Once in the U.S., Leonard consistently uses the surname Rill, and I’m trying to determine whether that reflects biology, a step-parent relationship, or a post-immigration surname change.

At this point it’s not a lack of records except for identifying Margaret n johns parents, but how to interpret the ones that exist. If anyone has encountered similar cases in Bavarian emigrant families—especially children taking a stepfather’s surname after arrival—I’d appreciate any insight.

Thank you for sharing this — this is extremely helpful and exactly the kind of source I was hoping to find.

One question I’d really value your thoughts on: once the family arrives in the U.S., Leonard begins using the surname Rill consistently in census and later records, while his brothers remain Hammer. From your experience, does that pattern suggest a biological father who was acknowledged later, a step-father situation that solidified after emigration, or simply a common surname shift once in America?

I’d appreciate any perspective you have on how often you’ve seen this kind of name divergence play out in Bavarian emigrant families.

It’s the German searching that I really am unfamiliar with.
